Chelsea vs. Crystal Palace Betting Prediction: Can Chelsea Grab a W?

Following a 3-3 draw with West Bromwich Albion last week, Chelsea were back into action against London rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

The visitors took the lead with Timo Werner scoring his first goal for Chelsea with a well-taken finish with his weaker right foot. Despite creating a number of chances, Chelsea couldn’t double their lead thanks to Hugo Lloris in goal.

Within the last 10 minutes, Tottenham’s Erik Lamela found the net to finally even the scoreline and take the game to penalties and it was Spurs who came out on top after Mason Mount hit the woodwork with his penalty that sent Tottenham to the quarterfinals of the Carabao Cup.

Most importantly and damaging for Chelsea and Frank Lampard, it’s one trophy that they are no longer in the running for and they are arguably only competitive in the FA Cup when you look at the teams ahead of them in both the Premier League and Champions League.

The penalty loss brought more pressure on Lampard who lamented his side’s ability to defend in the box.

“It was frustrating, the thing we work on is defending our box. We did it very well at Brighton and against Liverpool for most of the game,’ Lampard told Sky Sports.

“You sleep for one minute and don’t recover and defend a zone where players score goals then you are going to concede. Players have to get better at that.’

“We wanted to stay in the competition but there were some really good bits in the performance. With the control we had we want to score more goals.

“We can do better in terms of our reaction. Can we be more positive? I think that’s going to come. We were looking tired towards the end of the game and that’s understandable considering where we are.”

Chelsea Odds and Betting Prediction

Chelsea face a Crystal Palace side who sit sixth in the league after winning two of their three league games this season. Palace talisman Wilfried Zaha has made a strong start to the season scoring three goals in three games, which is just one off his entire tally for the whole of last season.

Palace already have one impressive away win under their belt this season, defeating Manchester United 3-1 at Old Trafford but their recent record against Chelsea lies heavily in the Blues favour.

Chelsea are currently on a five-match winning streak against Palace, with three of those five matches only separated by one goal which goes to show it’s always a difficult encounter between Chelsea and Crystal Palace.

I think Chelsea get back to winning ways with Timo Werner scoring his first Premier League goal.

Sportsbooks’ odds on a Chelsea win open at -250. Odds on Palace breaking their losing streak with a win against Chelsea open at +700. Odds on a draw between the two teams open at +375.

Burnley vs. Manchester City Betting Prediction

2020/21 Carabao Cup Fourth Round

Manchester City instantly get back into action after a shock and frankly embarrassing 5-2 loss to Leicester City at the Etihad Stadium.

Despite taking the lead in the opening minutes of the game through a brilliant strike by former Leicester man Riyad Mahrez, Man City’s fragile defence fell apart conceding three penalties throughout the game and becoming a victim to Jamie Vardy’s hattrick becoming the only player to ever score two hat-tricks against a Pep Guardiola team.

Granted, City do have a number of players out injured as well as their best defender in Aymeric Laporte who tested positive for COVID-19, but that is no excuse to put in a performance like they did on Sunday afternoon.

Man City coach Pep Guardiola said his team’s loss was down to his players lacking stability and belief.

“We played for 30 minutes so good – we scored a goal in [the fourth] minute,” said the manager. “But then we started to believe we were not playing good when it was the opposite. We are not strong enough to be stable and patient. We started to think we were playing bad. We told them at half-time they were playing good, try to be patient and the rest will be in our hands. We have to accept it,” he said. “But it’s still only the second game.”

Will Manchester City Continue with an Inconsistent Form?

City have the opportunity to put things right with a return to the win column away to Burnley in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

Sean Dyche’s men have had a tough start to the season, losing 4-2 to Leicester City on the opening day of the season, followed up by a 1-0 home loss to Southampton.

Injuries have played a part in Burnley’s struggles who are missing Ashley Barnes, James Tarkowski, Johann Berg Gudmundsson and captain Ben Mee, with the latter two recently returning to warm-ups but Dyche played off any chance of them featuring against Manchester City on Wednesday evening.

“They just joined in the warm-up and are not ready to join the main session yet,” said Dyche.

“We are just getting them back around the group really and then they will go and work on their individual work. For Johann it was nice to see him at least running on the grass. He has been doing a bit in the gym with recovery.

“Barnesy came through Friday (for the Under-23s) and that is really good news and he feels good. James Tarkowski was out there today and that will be a touch and go one as to whether he is right or not.

“Ben Mee just joined in the warmup and has gone and done some work on his own.”

Manchester City Betting Prediction v Burnley

Man City are currently on a five-match win streak against Burnley in all competitions, scoring five goals in three of those wins. They are yet to lose to Burnley since 2015.

I think City beats Burnley in convincing fashion to make it six in a row.

Sportsbooks’ odds on a City win open at -450. Odds on Burnley claiming a first win in five years against City open at +580. Odds on a draw at full time between the two clubs open at +300.

2020/21 EFL Cup Fourth Round

By: Fasika Zelealem

Due to multiple positive COVID-19 tests amongst the Leyton Orient squad, Tottenham Hotspur were awarded with a bye to progress to the fourth round of the EFL Cup to host Chelsea.

While Tottenham v Chelsea is a mouth-watering tie for a number of reasons, you can only feel sorry for Leyton Orient on not being given the chance to play a Premier League side like Tottenham and potentially going on to face Chelsea as well as the financial implications would have been huge.

Nevertheless, we get to witness an exciting tie between two rivals in need of a win and a trophy in the grand scheme of things.

Jose Mourinho, one of the greatest winners in all of sport was brought to Tottenham to bring exactly that; winning.

Frank Lampard, Mourinho’s former player and one of the greatest talents England has ever produced failed in the FA Cup final last year and after spending £250 million this summer, is under pressure to deliver success to his new-look Chelsea squad.

Can Chelsea Perform Under the Added Pressure

They’ve more or less had a poor start to the season, following up their 3-1 opening day win against Brighton & Hove Albion with a loss against champions Liverpool and scraping a point against West Bromwich Albion in a 3-3 draw after being down 3-0 before half-time.

Tottenham are level on points with Chelsea after three weeks of the season but are unlucky not to be two points ahead after Newcastle striker Callum Wilson’s 97th minute penalty claimed a point against Mourinho’s men in a 1-1 draw.

With Son Heung-min’s hamstring injury, Mourinho believes Tottenham will be forced to sacrifice the Carabao Cup due to his piling fixture schedule.

“What would you do in my position? I would like to fight for the Carabao, but I don’t think I can. We have a game on Thursday that gives us not as much money as the Champions League, but the group phase of the Europa League gives us a certain amount that for a club like us is very important.

“It’s a competition with a possible group phase that gives us a good chance to go through to the next knockout stage, so this game on Thursday is very important for us.

“Chelsea played Saturday, they have Sunday and Monday then they play Tuesday and then they play again on the weekend.

“So [with] their fantastic squad, if the manager decides not to rotate, he can perfectly play with the players that he wants. As you know, and forgetting the past Thursday, we played on the Sunday, now we play on the Tuesday, we play on the Thursday, we play on the Sunday [against Manchester United] again.”

Chelsea Betting Prediction Against Tottenham

Tottenham will no doubt rotate heavily and with Chelsea’s impressive squad depth, I have Chelsea progressing to the next round with a 2-0 victory.

Sportsbooks’ odds on a Tottenham home win open at +350. Odds on Chelsea winning at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium open at -143. Odds on a tie at full time between the two clubs open at +320.

Liverpool v Arsenal Betting Prediction

10/01/20, 19:45 PM Kick-Off

2020/21 EFL Cup Fourth Round

The two clubs were just in action against one another at Anfield on Monday night, a game Liverpool dominated and won 3-1. Despite Arsenal taking the lead through Alexandre Lacazette courtesy of a misplaced clearance from Andy Robertson, Liverpool hit back in swift fashion with goals from Sadio Mane and Robertson within six minutes to take a 2-1 lead into half-time.

Liverpool continued dominating possession and the creation of chances despite some scares from Arsenal, debutant Diogo Jota iced the game with a well-taken volley on his Premier League debut for the Reds to cap off an impressive showing from Jurgen Klopp’s side.

It’ll be a quick turnaround for both sides as a rematch of sorts takes place once again at Anfield in the fourth round of the EFL Cup.

Liverpool mauled Lincoln City 7-2 in the previous round whereas Arsenal defeated league leaders Leicester 2-0 at the King Power Stadium to earn a trip to Anfield.

I think we see a similar line-up against Arsenal to what Klopp fielded against Lincoln City, as well as a full debut for Thiago Alcantara who was slated to start against Arsenal on Monday but missed out through injury.

A New Name Already Paying Dividends

One who will most definitely start against Arsenal on Thursday is one Diogo Jota who netted on his league debut for Liverpool with s sweet volley outside the box.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp had a few kind words to say about his new signing.

“I’m really pleased for Diogo Jota. Top, top guy. It’s so difficult to improve a team like ours. He’s been on my list for two or three years, he’s here now.

“Today he had 60 or 70 minutes to watch how Sadio is doing and then he came on the pitch and did incredibly well. He scored a super goal, a nice first game at Anfield. He will never forget it; I will never forget it. A cool start.”

Long domestic cup runs are not something Liverpool have become accustomed to under Jurgen Klopp, aside from reaching the League Cup final in his debut season in 2015, Liverpool are yet to reach another League Cup or FA Cup Final.

Klopp’s decision to rotate heavily in the domestic competitions has drawn criticism for his apparent disrespect to the competitions but Klopp has long blamed the fixture schedule that forces him to make such heavy changes to protect the health of his players.

However, with an improved squad depth this season, even with heavy rotations, Liverpool will able to field a competitive line-up.

Liverpool Betting Prediction

Liverpool met Arsenal in the League Cup last year in what was one of the most exciting games in League Cup history with a 5-5 draw at full time before Liverpool progressed on penalties.

I’m going with another Liverpool win with a 3-2 scoreline meaning Liverpool will reach the quarterfinals of the EFL Cup.

Sportsbooks’ odds on Liverpool claiming their second win over Arsenal in four days open at +100. Odds on Arsenal getting revenge with a win open at +240. Odds on a draw between the two teams at full time open at +280.

Chelsea vs. Barnsley Betting Preview and Prediction

By: Fasika Zelealem

After a bright start to the season with a 3-1 away win at Brighton & Hove Albion, Chelsea suffered their first loss of the season at home against Liverpool in a 2-0 defeat.

A Sadio Mane brace helped by yet another Kepa Arrizabalaga blunder was enough to beat Chelsea who missed a penalty through Jorginho when the score was 2-0.

Those Chelsea fans who were down about the defeat, don’t worry, that team is nowhere near your final form. The likes of Thiago Silva, Ben Chilwell, Hakim Ziyech, and now Edouard Mendy have yet to play for the game whereas Christian Pulisic has yet to return from injury to star in his sophomore season for Chelsea.

Chelsea now begins their EFL Cup campaign at home to Sky Bet Championship side Barnsley. The Blues were knocked out of the competition last year courtesy of a 2-1 loss to Manchester United in the fourth round. It’s a trophy Chelsea have won five times with the last time being in 2015 while they made the final in 2019, losing 4-3 on penalties to Manchester City following a 0-0 draw after extra-time.

Chelsea is huge favorites for today’s game and rightly so, but we shouldn’t act like this game, and following draws don’t hold huge significance just because the value of the trophy has somewhat declined due to Manchester City’s dominance of it.

No More Excuses for Chelsea

Chelsea is a big club, and big clubs win trophies. Chelsea head coach Frank Lampard had the excuse last year of the departure of star player Eden Hazard, the transfer ban, and the almost forced selection of young players. After a year and £200 million of spending, Frank Lampard has no excuse.

He’s been backed by Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich and has been able to target problem areas in the squad such as the goalkeeper, defense, and forward positions.

Yes, they need time to gel, yes, these players aren’t robots and yes, it’s unrealistic to think they can instantly challenge sides like Liverpool and Manchester City whose core has been together for years now.

But it is not unrealistic to expect a trophy. Look at Mikel Arteta last season, he was Arsenal’s third manager of the year and he managed to outsmart Frank Lampard to win the FA Cup in his first-ever managerial job.

Chelsea vs. Barnsley Betting Prediction

On to their opponents for tonight, we’ve seen two sides of Barnsley. We’ve seen the 20th placed side in the Championship who has lost both their league games without scoring a goal.

And, we’ve also seen the Barnsley side who’s won both their first round and second round ties in the EFL Cup against fellow Championship sides Nottingham Forest and Middlesbrough without conceding a goal.

Chelsea remains huge favorites, coming in at -800 to go through to the next round. While Barnsley is massive underdogs with odds of +1800 to cause a huge upset. I believe Chelsea will rout Barnsley 4-0 with the Liverpool game in the back of their heads but for those bettors who have faith in the EFL Cup version of Barnsley, I implore you to go nuts.
