2019/20 Premier League Season, Week 38
Chelsea could have secured UEFA Champions League qualification with a draw against Liverpool on Wednesday, but instead were second best on the night as they lost 5-3 in a highly exciting game between two rivals.
Due to the loss, Chelsea has left the fate of their Champions League qualification to the final day of the season as they host sixth-placed Wolves.
Chelsea currently sits fourth in the table, level on points with third-placed Manchester United but behind on goal difference, as well as a point ahead of fifth-placed Leicester City.
Manchester United face Leicester City on the final day at King Power Stadium in what is a huge game for both clubs with Champions League football on the line. There are multiple possibilities on which two clubs will qualify and which club will miss out.
Should Manchester United defeat Leicester City and Chelsea draw against Wolves, United and Chelsea qualify. However, should Leicester and United drew and Chelsea also draw, Leicester will join United in the Champions League due to their superior goal difference compared to Chelsea.
Chelsea doesn’t have to win against Wolves to qualify but it’s very much in their best interest that they don’t have to rely on the result between Leicester and Man United.
Chelsea Odds to Qualify Against Wolves
Chelsea always isn’t facing any old team; Wolves have been one of the most impressive sides in the league this season. It’s sometimes crazy to think that this is only their second Premier League campaign since their promotion, and they look to set to qualify for European football for the second year running.
Wolves have lost just eight games this season, the joint-second lowest total in the league (Manchester United), only behind Liverpool. Raul Jimenez has been sensational this season, netting 17 goals while Adama Traore leads the side in assists with nine for the season, a record total in a season for the dynamic winger.
Since Wolves’ return to the Premier League, their record against Chelsea is equal. They’ve played three times, both teams have won once, lost once and drawn once. Chelsea did win the reverse fixture in comprehensive fashion with a 5-2 victory with Tammy Abraham netting his first-ever Chelsea hat-trick.
Sportsbooks odds on Chelsea winning and claiming Champions League football opens at -118. Odds on Wolves getting the win and spoiling Chelsea’s party opens at +300. Odds on a draw between the two sides open at +275.
Christian Pulisic: The Next American Soccer Star
Pulisic has always been a prodigy in football. Signed by German giants Borussia Dortmund at the age of 16, he set the league alight with impressive performances at such a young age. While his last season may have had more ups and downs, he did enough to earn a £57 million move to Chelsea to become the most expensive American football player of all time.
At still just 21 years of age, his Chelsea career has already been up and down, but nobody can deny his talent and since the restart, the Premier League has seen a more consistent Christian Pulisic who is not only performing well but performing against big teams in big moments.
A crucial goal against Aston Villa in a must-win game for Chelsea was his first game back from injury and followed that up with a stunning individual goal against Manchester City in a 2-1 win over the then-champions.
An assist and goal in wins over Watford and Crystal Palace for Pulisic showed the improvement in his end product.
While they lost 5-3 to Liverpool, Pulisic’s introduction was immediately felt after his Eden Hazard-like run past several Liverpool players enabled him to find Tammy Abraham who netted from close range. Pulisic netted himself just a few minutes later and in turn, laid a marker in his Chelsea career.
Pulisic will be a Premier League star, it’s just a matter of time.
