2019/20 EFL Cup, Round 1
Liverpool Odds Against Milton Keynes Dons
Liverpool begins its EFL Cup campaign away to League One side, MK Dons. Liverpool is in red-hot form, coming off a 2-1 away win against Chelsea to remain the only unbeaten side in the Premier League whilst possessing a 100% win rate, winning all six of their league games so far.
This will be MK Dons’ first-ever game against Liverpool, and what a team to come up against. They will face the current Champions League holders, who will look to win the EFL Cup since the 2011/12 season.
Sportsbooks’ odds on Liverpool leaving Milton Keynes with a win open at -700. MK Dons were promoted last year and are currently 15th in League One, after four wins and five losses in their first nine league fixtures. It’s been a mixed introduction to League One where they’ve lost four out of their last six matches.
Sadly for MK Dons, sportsbooks has not given them much of a chance to win the game with their odds of beating Liverpool open at +1200. Odds on a tie between the two clubs open at +600, according to sportsbooks where the odds greatly support Liverpool and as it should.
Liverpool’s Reintroduction to the Elite of Football
Liverpool has once again established itself as one of the elite clubs in Europe under Jurgen Klopp, where they’ve become realistic title challengers once again and won the Champions League trophy for the 6th time.
Liverpool has always played up to the opposition even in their worse years but taking the opposition for granted and losing to teams with much less quality was always Liverpool’s downfall.
That has changed over the past two years with much thanks to the recruitment of Liverpool’s hierarchy where signings like Andrew Robertson, Fabinho, Virgil Van Dijk and Alisson has created one of the best spines in Europe with elite talent and leadership in each position.
Liverpool has once again made a strong start to the 2019/20 Premier League season and remains the only real competition to Manchester City who is chasing history to become only the second club since Manchester United to win the Premier League trophy three times in a row.
Despite all this, Liverpool has had a poor record in the EFL Cup in the last couple of years. After reaching the EFL Cup semi-finals in the 2016/17 season, Liverpool has failed to get past the third round in the last two seasons.
MK Dons have already gone through two rounds in the EFL Cup, defeating bitter rivals AFC Wimbledon on penalties and fellow League One side Southend United 4-1.
While Liverpool is obvious favorites and my pick to go through to the 4th round, MK Dons have nothing to lose, and that is a dangerous mentality for Liverpool.
