Atletico Madrid vs Real Madrid
09/28/19, 20:00 PM Kick-Off (CEST)
2019/20 La Liga Season Week 6
Atletico Madrid v Real Madrid Odds
Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid met in the summer in the International Champions Cup, in which Atletico came out on top in a 7-3 victory, four of those Atletico goals courtesy of Diego Costa. If that pre-season game was a preview of Saturday, it’s going to be one hell of a game.
Real Madrid sits 2nd in the La Liga, level on points with leaders Athletic Bilbao, with an inferior goal difference. While Atletico, who were top for the first four weeks of the season find themselves 6th having suffered their first defeat of the season 10 days ago, away to Real Sociedad, losing 2-0.
Atletico’s strong start to the season that included three straight wins was halted by the loss to Sociedad, then came back from 2-0 down in the Champions League against Juventus and was then tied 0-0 last weekend to Celta Vigo at home.
Real Madrid rebounded from an embarrassing 3-0 loss to PSG in midweek, to defeat Sevilla 1-0 away from home and to give them their first league loss of the season.
Nobody in La Liga has caught fire so far, with current La Liga champions Barcelona in a surprising 8th, after just two wins, two losses and one tie in their first five games of the season. Barcelona has had to do without Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi for parts of this season, but both have returned in recent weeks to get the team back on form.
The Madrid Derby remains one of the greatest rivalries in football and was re-ignited by Atletico Madrid’s return to football’s elite when they appointed former Atletico player Diego Simeone in 2010. In recent meetings between the two sides, it’s been difficult to separate them.
Madrid Derby Odds: Atletico Madrid Odds and Real Madrid Odds and Recent History
In their last five meetings in the league, four of those games have ended in a tie, while Real Madrid won one of those games. Atletico, however, did overcome Real Madrid in last year’s UEFA Super Cup, to bring another European trophy back to the red side of Madrid.
Sportsbooks, therefore, has odds on a tie between the two teams opening at +230. Atletico’s odds of winning at home against Madrid open at +130, according to sportsbooks, while a Madrid win open at +210, making Atletico home favorites.
Madrid will, however, be bolstered by the form of Karim Benzema, who is re-establishing himself as one of the top strikers in Europe with five league goals in five games. The return of Eden Hazard after injury will improve Madrid however manager Zinedine Zidane will have his work cut out for him to get the most out of a talented team without a player like Cristiano Ronaldo to bail you out of difficult moments.
Despite the return of Hazard and Benzema’s form, Atletico has the home advantage and I believe they’ll get their first win over Madrid in the league since 2016.
