The Calder Trophy awarded to the NHL’s best rookie has been a one-horse race for quite some time. After the top two overall draft picks Jack Hughes and Kaapo Kakko disappointed early in the season, they fell down in the odds and another rookie took the reigns.
Cale Makar is the leader in the clubhouse to win the Calder Trophy. He is a defenseman and missed time with injury but is still tied for the league lead in points among rookies with 35 points. He is a force on the Colorado Avalanche’s blue line.
Makar is also still the odds-on favorite to win the Calder Trophy. He is at -275, which is still good value for the defenseman.
Makar isn’t the only defenseman making some noise, however. Quinn Hughes is right behind Makar in points with 37 but has played in eight more games than the Avalanche defenseman. He also only has five goals to Makar’s 11 and is a minus-8 rating while Makar is plus-4.
Hughes’ odds of +275 present some value if Makar falters or suffers another injury, so don’t completely count him out.

When Can You Expect Dominik Kubalik’s Calder Trophy Odds
There is one rookie who has been on fire recently and should soon have odds on the book. Chicago Blackhawks rookie winger Dominik Kubalik doesn’t have any odds posted but is the first rookie to 20 goals (in 47 games) and has 31 points, just four behind Makar.
Kubalik has 12 goals and six assists for 18 points in his past 14 games since December 19th. He also has 13 points in his last eight games and seven points (six goals) in his past four games.
The rookie winger is getting a chance to shine with the Blackhawks. He has been given a great opportunity to play with superstars Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane on Chicago’s top line. If he continues to produce, he’ll continue to get those opportunities, and those points will continue to come.
Kubalik had 57 points (25 goals, 32 assists) in 50 games with HC Ambri-Piotta in Switzerland’s National League last year, so this isn’t a fluke.
If you get a chance to bet on Kubalik, go for it. He should start as a decent longshot if he gets odds soon, and that provides great value for the bettor.
Cale Makar is still the favorite to win the Calder Trophy at -275, but his odds don’t provide the type of value that Kubalik does. If you get a chance to bet on Kubalik, go for it.
