San Francisco 49ers
Jimmy Garoppolo will see plenty of familiar faces on Sunday when he brings the 49ers (3-3) to Gillette Stadium to face his former team. Garoppolo, who was traded from the Patriots in 2017, answered a disastrous start with a stellar one last Sunday by throwing for three touchdowns in San Francisco’s 24-16 win over the Los Angeles Rams.
Two-time Pro Bowl tight end George Kittle had seven receptions for 109 yards and a touchdown against the Rams. Kittle has been dominant since he entered the league in 2017, with his overall body of work drawing effusive praise from Patriots coach Bill Belichick earlier this week.
San Francisco’s bread-and-butter ground attack took a hit with running back Raheem Mostert (team-leading 303 rushing yards) sustaining an ankle injury versus the Rams. Jerick McKinnon is averaging 5.1 yards per carry and likely is first in line should Mostert miss time. Undrafted JaMycal Hasty has fared well (4.2 average on 11 carries) in a smaller sample size.
New England Patriots
The Patriots (2-3) find themselves in unfamiliar territory after the first five games of a season, as they are under .500 at that stretch for the first time since 2002. New England appeared sluggish out of the gate last Sunday en route to dropping its second straight decision with an 18-12 setback to Denver.
Cam Newton rushed for a season-high 76 yards versus the Broncos and bulled his way into the end zone for the fifth time on the ground this season. While Newton said there was “no need to press the panic button,” others might be compelled to at least look for it after the former NFL MVP threw two interceptions, was sacked four times and guided the club to a season-low 288 yards.
Running back James White continues to prove to be a reliable option out of the backfield, reeling in 15 receptions for 103 yards over his last two games. Should White find the end zone in his 82nd career game on Sunday, he’ll become the fastest running back to reach the 25-touchdown reception mark in NFL history — eclipsing Brian Westbrook’s record of 87 regular-season games.
49ers at Patriots Betting Pick for Week 7
The Patriots have proven to be one-dimensional on offense, with their 25th-ranked passing attack averaging just 207.2 yards per game. Julian Edelman, who leads the team in receptions (20) and receiving yards (302), has just seven catches for 66 yards over his last three contests.
The 49ers likely will be content with forcing Newton to use his arm — rather than his legs — in what is shaping up to be a pivotal game for the Patriots.

The 49ers clearly are hobbling as they venture across country to face the Patriots, whose offense has failed to click under the direction of Newton. Points may be hard to come by in this one.
