Vikings at Packers Betting Preview: Vikings (+7/-110), Packers (-7/-110)
It has been an ugly season for the Vikings, who stumble into their rivalry game against the Packers with five losses in their first six games. Everything that can go wrong has gone wrong for Minnesota, from poor play by quarterback Kirk Cousins to leaky defense and injuries at key positions.
One piece of good news for the Vikings is that running back Dalvin Cook is expected to be back from a groin injury in Week 8. Cook returned to practice this week, and barring any setbacks, he can rejoin the offense to provide a big-play threat on any given down and distance.
Minnesota is coming off an embarrassing 40-23 loss against the Atlanta Falcons but had a bye in Week 7 to rest up for the Packers. The Vikings faced the Packers in the first week of the season, losing 43-34 on their home turf in Minneapolis.
Green Bay Packers
At 5-1, the Packers sit atop the NFC North division standings. Aaron Rodgers & Co. will look to keep it that way while they also pursue a regular-season sweep against the Vikings.
In their first matchup against the Vikings, the Packers scored 22 points in the first half and 21 points in the second half to secure a nine-point win.
Aaron Rodgers was dominant as he completed 32 of 44 passes for 364 yards, four touchdowns and zero interceptions — good for a passer rating of 127.5. Davante Adams hauled in two touchdowns, while Allen Lazard and Marquez Valdes-Scantling had one score apiece.
Green Bay is coming off a 35-20 win over the Houston Texans, which marked a strong response from its first loss of the season one week earlier against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Vikings at Packers Betting Pick for Week 8
Green Bay is more talented than Minnesota and should be comfortable back on its home turf. However, the Packers’ defense is far from perfect (to be fair, the same is true for Minnesota), and rivalry games such as this one rarely end in blowout fashion.
Look for the Vikings to make it competitive, but ultimately Green Bay will outlast Minnesota because it has the best player on the field in Rodgers. Cousins, tied for the NFL lead with 10 interceptions, doesn’t stack up in this head-to-head showdown.
Vikings at Packers Betting Pick:
Packers 31, Vikings 27
Vikings at Packers Best Bet for Week 8
These teams combined for 77 points in their first meeting of the season, and another scoring binge could be in order for both sides. Cook’s return for Minnesota bodes well for the Vikings’ offense, and Rodgers has the physical and mental capacity to pick apart the Minnesota defense.
Maybe the teams won’t reach the 70s again in total points, but they can clear the over.
