Chiefs at Broncos Betting Preview: Chiefs (-9.5/-115), Broncos (+9.5/-105)
Kansas City Chiefs
While it remains to be seen if new running back Le’Veon Bell will be available for Sunday’s game, the Chiefs have plenty to defeat the Broncos without him.
Rookie running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire (second in the NFL with 506 rushing yards) knows he will have to start sharing the ball soon, even after a 161-yard performance against the Bills on Monday and that could be a motivator for him Sunday.
A year after guiding the Chiefs to a Super Bowl triumph, quarterback Patrick Mahomes has gotten right back to work. His 1,699 yards passing are fifth in the NFL and his 15 touchdown passes are third.
The Chiefs’ defense has been a mixed bag. Kansas City is ninth in the NFL against the pass with 1,248 yards allowed but third from the bottom against the rush with 872 yards allowed. Only the Cowboys (1,040) and the Texans (1,065) are worse.
Consecutive victories have the Broncos feeling much better after an 0-3 start, with the offense now focused on finishing off drives. Denver’s 18-12 victory over the New England Patriots on Sunday came on six field goals from kicker Brandon McManus, who was the AFC’s special teams’ player of the week.
The Chiefs have been spotty against the run, giving the Broncos’ rushing attack of Phillip Lindsay, Melvin Gordon and Royce Freeman the chance to get going. The Broncos average just 3.7 yards per carry, tied with the Bengals for 30th in the NFL.
Quarterback Drew Lock was doing well to shake off the rust in his return from a shoulder injury until two late interceptions. He was 10 of 24 for 189 yards. Lindsay’s return from a toe injury also helps the team’s prospects moving forward. The defense allows 22.0 points per game.
Chiefs at Broncos Betting Pick for Week 7
The Broncos might actually turn into a playoff team by year’s end, but Sunday’s game doesn’t appear to be the time they round the corner. Lock and Lindsay still need time to get into a flow, leaving the defense to carry a heavy burden in the short term.
After a stumble at home against the Las Vegas Raiders, the Chiefs were much better on the road Monday against a solid Bills’ team. The Chiefs will be playing their seventh game, but just their third on a Sunday.
Chiefs at Broncos Betting Pick:
Chiefs 28, Broncos 17
Chiefs at Broncos Best Bet for Week 7
Expect a solid Broncos’ defense to have plenty of energy for a home game against the Super Bowl champions.
The Broncos will try to establish a running game early but in the end, their offense won’t be able to do enough to keep their defense off the field.
Chiefs at Broncos Best Bet: Chiefs MINUS 9.5 (-115)
