Niners traded for OT Trent Williams before Joe Staley announced retirement
The San Francisco 49ers are shaking things up on the offensive line. Earlier today, the Niners announced they acquired Former Pro Bowler Trent Williams from the Washington Redskins. Following that trade announcement, OT Joe Staley, a 13-year veteran in the NFL, announced his retirement from the league.
The 49ers received Trent Williams in the trade with Washington. In exchange, the Redskins received a fifth-round pick in this year’s draft and a third-round pick in next year’s draft. The Niners said that the trade will become official once Williams passes a physical.
Following Williams’ acquisition, more surprising news came out of San Francisco. Around noon today, Offensive Tackle Joe Staley announced his retirement from the NFL. The 35-year-old spent 13 years in the league and played with San Fran his entire career. He was elected to six Pro Bowls and was also named a Second-Team All-Pro three years in a row from 2011-2013. Last month, Staley was named a member of the NFL’s 2010s All-Decade Team.
After being drafted in 2010, Trent Williams went on to make 119 starts in his nine-year tenure with the Washington Redskins. During that time, Williams was elected to seven-consecutive Pro Bowls from 2013 to 2019. He was also honored as a Second-Team All-Pro in 2015. Williams did not play in a single game with Washington last season after his request to be traded to another team was not honored by the Redskins’ front office prior to the beginning of the 2019 season. Williams is set to turn 32-years-old this July.
The San Francisco 49ers finished last season as the NFC Champions after defeating the Green Bay Packers. They went on to face the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl LIV. The Chiefs would end up winning the game 31-20.
