Heisman Odds Tracker: LSU Tiger Joe Burrow is the Top Dog as LSU is No. 1

LSU is the new No. 1 this week in more places than The Associated Press Top 25.

Quarterback Joe Burrow’s meteoric rise to national prominence hit a high point this week following LSU’s win over Auburn, propelling the Tigers to the top spot in the poll ahead of their Nov. 9

college football team

showdown at No. 2 Alabama.

The win also turned the senior signal-caller into the Heisman Trophy frontrunner at the FanDuel Sportsbook, which has Burrow listed as a +160 selection to become just the second LSU player in school history to win the award along with 1959 recipient Billy Cannon.

Burrow threw for 321 yards and a touchdown in last Saturday’s 23-20 victory over then-No. 9 Auburn, LSU’s third win over a top 10 opponent. Burrow ranks second in the nation in passing yards (2,805) and touchdowns (30) while leading the country with a 78.8 percent completion rate.

The bye week for both teams came at an opportune time given it will allow Alabama counterpart Tua Tagovailoa (+300) a chance to heal a high ankle sprain suffered in the Crimson Tide’s 48-7 romp over Arkansas last Saturday. Tagovailoa, who went 6 for 8 for 45 yards before suffering the injury, underwent a “tightrope” surgical procedure to help speed the healing process and is listed as a game-time decision by coach Nick Saban.

Heisman Odds on the Alabama Quarterbacks, Current and Former

Tagovailoa is second in completion percentage (74.7), just behind Burrow in third with 27 TD tosses, and 15th in yards (2,166). His predecessor at Alabama and current Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts is between the two at +280, looking to regain his frontrunner status while keeping the Sooners alive for a spot in the Big 12 title game and College Football Playoff.

Hurts accounted for 491 yards of total offense and four touchdowns in last week’s 48-41 upsert loss at Kansas State and has 3,270 total yards and 34 TDs passing and rushing. He is trying to become just the ninth FBS quarterback to have at least 3,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards in a season and the first since Lamar Jackson did so for Louisville in 2017.

Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields continues to be the Heisman darkhorse among the signal-callers, currently at +900. He has thrown for 1,659 yards and 24 touchdowns while adding another nine scores rushing for the unbeaten Buckeyes and is coming off a solid performance in which he totaled 195 yards and three touchdowns in a 38-7 romp over Wisconsin.

But the player rising up the board is Fields’ teammate and defensive end Chase Young (+1,400), who is bidding to be the first player on that side of the ball to win the Heisman since Michigan’s Charles Woodson in 1997. Young racked up four sacks in the win over the Badgers and leads the nation with 13.5 overall. Young also has a team-best 15.5 tackles for loss and 29 overall, anchoring an Ohio State defense that leads the country in scoring defense (7.9 ppg) and passing yards allowed (132.8), and second in total yards allowed (224.3).
