Jaguars at Chanticleers Betting Preview: Jaguars (+17.5), Chanticleers (-17.5)

South Alabama Jaguars Betting Preview

The Jaguars (3-3, 2-1 Sun Belt) are coming off a 24-17 loss at Georgia Southern last week but still have had their moments. They started the season with an impressive road win at Southern Mississippi and have recorded conference wins against Texas State and Louisiana-Monroe to remain in contention a half-game back of Louisiana in the West Division.

“The great thing for us is we still control our own destiny,” Jaguars coach Steve Campbell said. “We’ll have another good opportunity this weekend against an outstanding Coastal Carolina team.”

The game at undefeated Coastal Carolina will be the second in a three-game road stretch.

“Coastal Carolina is a really good team,” Jaguars receiver Cade Sutherland said, “but we are also a really good team.”

The Jaguars rank only ninth in the 10-team Sun Belt in scoring, however, with an average of 25.2 points a game, and they are mid-pack at fifth in scoring defense in allowing 24.7 points a game. They will be facing the league’s top scoring team in Coastal Carolina, and the Chanticleers rate high in defense as well.

The Chanticleers are scoring at a 40.3 clip and limiting foes to just 18.0 points a game

Quarterback Grayson McCall missed the 28-14 win over Georgia State with an injury but returned last week to throw for 254 yards and four touchdowns as the Chanticleers romped past Georgia State 51-0. He also rushed for a touchdown.

McCall, a redshirt freshman, has two or more touchdown passes in every game he has played this season and been the league’s Offensive Player of the Week twice.

“We have to find a way to contain him,” South Alabama defensive coordinator Greg Stewart said. “We need a very good red-zone plan. If they are not the best in the country, they are one of the top five when it comes to scoring touchdowns in the red zone.”

For the season, the Chanticleers have 25 touchdowns on 31 trips inside and opponent’s 20-yard line.

The Chanticleers also have a deep running back corps led by veteran CJ Marable. He has 353 yards to lead the team while Reese White has 228 yards. Junior Shermari Jones, a transfer from Independence Community College in Kansas, has 208 yards and has started one of his five appearances.

“Shermari’s addition takes a lot of pressure off of me and CJ,” White said. “Shermari is kind of new to the offense and he’s learning more.”

Jaguars at Chanticleers Betting Pick for November 7, 2020

The Chanticleers will be looking to make up for last year’s 31-28 loss to the Jaguars that cost them bowl eligibility. CJ Marable rushed for only 40 yards on 10 carries in that game. He has 358 yards rushing in six outings this year.

Jaguars at Chanticleers Betting Pick:

Chanticleers 41, Jaguars 17

Jaguars at Chanticleers Best Bet for November 10, 2020

The Chanticleers have scored at least 30 points in five of their six wins and twice have topped 50 (51-0 against Georgia State last week and 52-23 against Arkansas State on Oct. 3). The Jaguars have averaged just 20.3 points a game but have held opponents to just 20.2 a game.
