After seeing Mississippi State’s K.J. Costello throw for 623 yards in a 44-34 loss last week, the Tigers gladly will welcome back cornerback Derek Stingley Jr., who sat out last week’s debacle after being hospitalized with an illness. Stingley had 38 tackles and six interceptions and was credited with breaking up 15 passes last year.
Coach Ed Orgeron expects to have Stingley this week. Myles Brennan passed for 345 yards for the Tigers, which is a very respectable number, but it pales in light of what Costello put up. Brennan also had two interceptions, and the running game netted only 80 yards after 45 yards in sacks were deducted. Chris Curry led the Tigers in rushing with just 47 yards on nine carries.
Vandy got a nice effort out of true freshman Ken Seals who was 20 of 29 passing for 150 yards in the 17-12 loss at Texas A&M. Amir Abdur-Rahman accounted for almost half Seals’ yardage total with 72 yards on five receptions, one for a touchdown. The running game struggled with only 105 yards for the night for an average of 2.8 per carry.
Ja’Veon Marlow and Jamuari Wakefield shared the workload with 16 and 15 carries, respectively for 65 and 37 yards. The Commodores accredited themselves well on defense. They gave up 183 yards rushing but held the Aggies to just 189 passing. It helped that the Commodores were able to amass just under 34 minutes of possession time.

Last year’s meeting also was played in Nashville with the Tigers emerging a 66-38 winner. But LSU’s cast has changed so much a repeat of that shootout hardly can be expected. The Tigers lead the series 23-7-1 and have won the last eight meetings. Stingley’s return should bolster LSU’s pass defense. A limited number of students will be allowed at the game.

Vandy has a capable defenses under Derek Mason but usually wilt when the offense can’t stay on the field. That wasn’t necessarily the case at Texas A&M, where the Commodores ran off 67 plays to 55 for the Aggies, but they still managed only 255 yards and got two of their points on a safety.
