Iowa State Cyclones
No. 23 Iowa State Coach Matt Campbell is looking for more consistency out of his Cyclones (3-2, 3-1 Big 12), who have gone through periods of outstanding play with lulls mixed in as they try to stay in the conference race.
“The reality for the entirety of the team is you can’t have lulls and so, offense, defense, special teams, everybody included, looks exactly the same,” Campbell said. “We have to iron out our team if we want to become our best.”
Two missed field goals, nine penalties and a handful of defensive breakdowns contributed to a 24-21 defeat at Oklahoma State that dropped Iowa State six spots in the rankings.
Four consecutive three-and-outs in the second half kept the Cyclones from attacking and exposed vulnerabilities in a diverse offense that previously flourished behind quarterback Brock Purdy. Purdy completed 19 of 34 passes for only 162 yards, his lowest total since a 145-yard performance in the loss to Louisiana in the opener.
But Breece Hall, the nation’s leading rusher with a 143.2-yard average, continues to sizzle after gaining a career-high 185 yards on 20 carries against the Cowboys.
“His ability to create big plays is outstanding,” Campbell said. “The bigger thing for me is just the consistency of running the football wasn’t as good as what we’ve had at times. We’ve just got to figure that out.’’
The Jayhawks (0-5, 0-4 Big 12) apparently have settled on a quarterback for the rest of the season. Coach Les Miles is turning the job over to true freshman Jalon Daniels after testing three starters in that spot in the first four games.
“The opportunity for him to get the majority of the snaps in practice is going to happen anyway,” said Miles, “so we might as well.”
Daniels has started three games and has completed 45 of 79 passes for 381 yards. He was 22 of 39 for a season-high 207 yards in the 55-14 loss to Kansas State last week. He missed two games this season with a foot injury.
He rushed for a net 27 yards, was sacked four times, and threw an interception that the Wildcats returned for a touchdown.
Velton Gardner with 297 yardsleads a rushing attack that has averaged just 124.6 yards a game. Kwamie Lassiter II has team highs in receptions with 22 for 229 yards and one of the team’s three touchdown catches. Andrew Parchment has the other two scoring receptions among his 17 catches for 140 yards.

The Jayhawks a pretty productive offensive showing in last year’s loss to the Cyclones rushing for 165 yards and passing for 328 for 493 yards in total offense.
But quarterback Carter Stanley, who passed for all 328 yards has moved on, and running back Pooka Williams, who rushed for 164 yards that game, left the team after the October 17 loss to West Virginia over concerns for the health of his mother.
