An efficient offense and a stingy defense is the Utah formula. The Utes haven’t allowed a sack and have not committed a turnover in wins over BYU and Northern Illinois. Quarterback Tyler Huntley is completing 77.1 percent of his passes (27 of 35), while Zack Moss is a workhorse running with power and make-you-miss ability, having gaining 267 yards on 47 carries this season. Defensive lineman Bradlee Anae has three sacks, and the Utes have a pair of pick-sixes this season from a lockdown secondary.

One of those receivers, Penn State graduate transfer Juwan Johnson, was considered “50-50” to play this week because of a leg injury, but perhaps it’s best to rest him up for the Pac-12 opener next week at Stanford.

Kellen Mond was just OK against Clemson, going 24 of 42 for 236 yards while the Aggies couldn’t mount a running game against the Tigers, managing just 53 yards on 27 attempts. That should change against Lamar, and coach Jimbo Fisher is going to want to see what he has in the backfield now that his leading rusher, sophomore Jashaun Corbin, is out for the season due to a hamstring injury. Look for true freshman Isaiah Spiller to get the start, with Cordarrian Richardson, Deneric Prince and Jacob Kibodi also in the mix.

Boise State true freshman quarterback Hank Bachmeier has looked like the real deal, throwing for 689 yards in two games, including 407 in the season-opening comeback win at Florida State. But the Broncos are leaving a lot of points on the field with only four touchdowns in 12 red-zone chances, and holding on to the ball has been an issue as BSU has lost possession three of the eight times it has put the ball on the turf. More efficient play will lead to the kind of margin of victory that coach Bryan Harsin wants to see.
