Chanticleers at Panthers Betting Preview: Chanticleers (-3), Panthers (+3)
Coastal Carolina Chanticleers
Coach Jamey Chadwell’s No. 20 Chanticleers (5-0, 3-0 Sun Belt) have gotten the attention of the college football world with their start, and that adds to the pressure of their test at Georgia State.
“When you get ranked, all the eyes are on you,” Chadwell said. “You never want to be that team that gets their one shot (and falters), and you don’t want to be a flash in the pan.”
The Chanticleers passed their first test as a ranked team last week behind a backup quarterback and a solid defense to defeat visiting Georgia Southern 28-14.
Fred Payton filled in for injured quarterback Grayson McCall and got things going at the right times. He completed 15 of 28 passes for 252 yards and three scores and netted 38 yards rushing on 10 carries.
Chadwell said it might be unclear until the end of the week if McCall will play against Georgia State. McCall has completed 67.7 percent of his passes for 232.5 yards a game in four appearances, but Chadwell said it’s not worth using him if he’s operating at only 70 or 80 percent.
“We don’t even know if he’ll be ready,” Chadwell said.
Georgia State Panthers
Georgia State (2-2, 1-2 Sun Belt) has only split four games, but can be a dangerous foe. The Panthers took Sun Belt West defending champion Louisiana to overtime before losing 34-31 and then last week won at East contender Troy 36-34.
They also lost a 59-52 shootout with Arkansas State in one of the more entertaining affairs of the young season.
The Panthers are getting used to games coming down to the wire.
“We’ve come to expect that around here,” Elliott said.
The Panthers have scored at least 30 points in every game this season, and quarterback Cornelious “Quad” Brown IV is second in total offense in the Sun Belt with 275.8 yards per game. A redshirt freshman, he trails only McCall in that category and has thrown for nine touchdowns, with four interceptions.
Linebacker Jordan Strachan was selected Defensive Player of the Week in the Sun Belt after recording 2.5 sacks and recovering two fumbles at Troy.
Chanticleers at Panthers Betting Pick for October 31, 2020
The Chanticleers obviously have gotten over the hump after the close losses they experienced in 2019. If McCall is not 100 percent, running back C.J. Marable (282 rushing yards, 14 catches for 104 yards and three touchdowns) looks to be the X factor for the Chanticleers.
Chanticleers at Panthers Betting Pick:
Chanticleers 48, Panthers 38

The two teams are No. 1 (Georgia State at 42.0 points per game) and No. 2 (Coastal Carolina at 38.2) in the Sun Belt in scoring, but the Chanticleers hold the advantage in defense. They have given up only 21.6 points a game while the Panthers have allowed 39.0. A shootout is expected.
