MLS Game of the Week Odds Preview
New York City FC vs. New York Red Bulls
08/24/19, 23:00 (GMT)
New York City FC
New York Red Bulls
The Hudson River Derby is a chance for bragging rights in New York as the Red Bulls can draw level with NYC FC with a win. Odds on the Hudson River Derby
A matchup between not only Eastern Conference Rivals but City Rivals comes at a pivotal part of the season where the MLS Cup is just over a month away. New York City FC sit three points ahead of the New York Red Bulls in 3rd place in the Eastern Conference. They have the opportunity to create a gap in the table as they have two games in hand.
Historically, the Red Bulls have dominated this fixture with nine wins in 15 matches compared to NYC FC’s four wins. A player who’s dominated this fixture is Bradley Wright Phillips, the leading scorer in New York Red Bulls history. The Englishman has 12 goals in 13 fixtures against NYC FC, however the Red Bulls will be without their talisman, who’s only managed nine league games this season as he continues to struggle with injury.
The Red Bulls aren’t the only one who’s lost a star man, with NYC FC losing Spanish legend David Villa permanently rather than to an injury. Villa left NYC in 2018 on a free transfer to Vissel Kobe to reunite with former Barcelona and Spanish National team teammate Andres Iniesta. Villa departed New York as their record goal scorer with 82 goals in 130 games and greatest ever player in their short history in the MLS.
Bragging Rights in New York
The Hudson River Derby is set to be a hotly contested match and sportsbooks recognise the equal level playing field that is set when these two teams face off against each other. Sportsbooks have New York City FC winning the contest at +100, while they have the New York Red Bulls coming out victorious at +200. New York City FC are ever so slight favorites, however the sportsbooks illustrate that the match could really go either way.
The New York Red Bulls currently retain bragging rights in the city of New York, winning their last contest 2-1 on July 14th of 2019. There is a very real possibility that these two teams can meet up against one another in the MLS Cup playoffs and that would be the first playoff match-up between the rivals.
New York City FC are coming off two wins in a row albeit against the two worst team in the Eastern Conference, FC Cincinnati and Columbus Crew SC. While, the Red Bulls got back to winning ways yesterday with an impressive away win at D.C. United where Wayne Rooney got sent off for striking an opponent in the face. The win in Washington was a critical one for the Red Bulls who created a two-point gap between themselves and D.C. United who have one game in hand.
Sportsbooks also have decent odds of +250 for a tie, however I believe this game is bound for a win or loss, I just don’t know for which team.
