Rays at Yankees Betting Preview: Rays (+110), Yankees (-121)
Tampa Bay Rays
The Rays, on the verge of their second trip to the American League Championship Series, can close out the American League Division Series on Thursday night against the Yankees.
Tampa Bay is in this position due to an offense that has produced 15 runs the past two games after New York won the series opener 9-3. The Rays followed up their 7-5 win with an 8-4 victory Wednesday, getting 13 hits, including homers from Kevin Kiermaier, rookie Randy Arozarena and backup catcher Michael Perez. The Rays are hitting .257 with nine homers in the series, and nobody is hotter than Arozarena, who is 8-for-12 with three homers and a 1.417 slugging percentage.
Tampa Bay will use Ryan Thompson as its opener on Thursday. It will be his second appearance of the series after he allowed three hits in two scoreless innings Monday. After Thompson, left-hander Ryan Yarbrough likely will be used as the bulk reliever with the hope of getting the ball to Nick Anderson and Pete Fairbanks, neither of whom pitched Wednesday.
New York Yankees
The season is on the brink for the Yankees after Masahiro Tanaka and the bullpen couldn’t hold down the Rays in Game 2. New York’s relievers have allowed nine runs in 12 innings over the past two games after Chad Green, Zack Britton and Luis Cessa each pitched a shutout inning to lock up a Game 1 win.
While past postseasons have seen New York’s offense go quiet, the Yankees have 18 runs in the series but a 6.23 ERA. The hottest New York batter is Giancarlo Stanton, who is hitting .417 (5-for-12) with four homers in the series and .368 (7-for-19) with six homers overall in the postseason.
New York’s season will be depending on Jordan Montgomery, who was 2-3 with a 5.11 ERA in 10 regular-season starts. Montgomery served up homers to Arozarena and Michael Brosseau on Sept. 2 when he allowed four runs and got two outs in a 5-2 loss at Yankee Stadium.
Rays at Yankees Betting Pick for Game 4
The Yankees’ offense is unlikely to be held in check three games in a row. New York’s pitching might again experience some shaky moments, but it will do enough to force a Game 5 on Friday.
Rays at Yankees Betting Pick:
Yankees 8, Rays 6
Rays at Yankees Best Bet for Game 4
The balls have been flying out of San Diego leading to combined run totals of 12 in each of the first three games. The smart play is the teams will reach double figures once again.
Rays at Yankees Best Bet: OVER 10 total runs (-110)
