St. Louis Cardinals Odds
Jack Flaherty is scheduled to make his first start since July 24 — Opening Night — when the St. Louis Cardinals opens their third doubleheader in five days on Wednesday against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.
The right-hander beat Pittsburgh 5-4 in the opener, allowing two runs on six hits in seven innings with no walks and six strikeouts. Flaherty is 3-2 with a 2.70 ERA in 10 games, including nine starts, against Chicago.
He will look for offensive support from Paul Goldschmidt, who went 3-for-4 on Tuesday night to raise his average to .359. Goldschmidt has hit safely in nine of the team’s first 11 games.
Chicago Cubs Odds
Chicago Cubs right-hander Alec Mills, who has been somewhat of a revelation, gets the call for Game 1 of a doubleheader Wednesday against the St. Louis Cardinals at Wrigley Field.
Mills is 2-1 with a 2.84 ERA in three starts, although he ate a 4-3 loss Saturday at home against Milwaukee, when he yielded four runs in six innings. He is 0-0 with a 1.98 ERA in four career outings, two of them starts, against the Cardinals.
Kyle Schwarber has fanned 23 times in the past 13 games and 32 times for the season, including three whiffs on Tuesday. However, his other at-bat was a two-run homer that helped raise his average to .229.
