Washington Nationals Odds
While one could extend the Washington Nationals a bit of a hall pass for 2020, the facts are that a team that won the World Series last year could easily finish in last place in the NL East.
At 12-20, Washington currently resides in the cellar, and nothing indicates it will suddenly find last year’s form over the final 28 games. But the Nationals at least can trot out one of their front-line arms in Patrick Corbin (2-2, 3.82 ERA) on Tuesday at Philadelphia.
The lefty got a no-decision in a 3-2 loss Wednesday at home against the Phillies. Aside from one start, Corbin has pitched solid baseball, crafting a strikeout-walk ratio of better than 4-1 and posting a 1.30 WHIP.
Philadelphia Phillies Odds
Philadelphia’s 8-6 win Monday night over the Washington Nationals gives the Phillies six victories in the past seven games and elevates them to the .500 mark for the first time since Aug. 18.
The Phillies have gotten well-pitched games from their starters lately, aside from Jake Arrieta’s stink bomb Sunday night against Atlanta, and will trot out ace Aaron Nola on Tuesday night.
Nola (3-2, 3.00 ERA) is matching up against Patrick Corbin for the second time in six days; he won the first matchup 3-2 on Wednesday with seven good innings, whiffing eight. Nola has fanned 48 hitters in 36 innings over six starts and boasts an outstanding WHIP of 0.92, the best of his career.
Field Level Media Prediction for Nationals at Phillies on September 1, 2020
Corbin’s career ERA against the Phillies is about a run lower per game than Nola’s against the Nationals, but Philadelphia clearly has the momentum. The Phillies also have a lineup that is starting to round into form with the revival of Rhys Hoskins, and that might make the difference.
FLM Prediction: Phillies (-150) 6, Nationals 4
Field Level Media‘s Best Bet for Nationals at Phillies on September 1, 2020
Two good starters are on the mound, so be brave and take the under, right? Think again, seamhead. This is Citizens Bank Park, where the ball flies and the bullpens aren’t great.
Also, both teams saw the other’s starter just last week, so they know what they’re facing. Bet the over, be patient and watch your ship come in late.
