Odds increase on Ryu, while Scherzer and deGrom are now Cy Young Odds favorites
As the Wild Card completion heats up, Dodger Hyun Jin Ryu has cooled down. Ryu picked up his third straight defeat in an 11-5 rout to the Diamondbacks, failing to get out of the fifth for the second consecutive start. The Korean righty tied his season worsts, surrendering seven earned runs on ten base hits. His ERA has ballooned by almost a full run since early August, as opposing batters have pushed across 18 runs in 14.2 innings over his three-game losing streak. His 2.35 ERA still leads the NL, but has risen to over 2.00 for the first time since May. Ryu’s poor performance over the skid was not unexpected, as he is pitching more innings this season than he has in his last four injury-plagued campaigns. The NL Cy Young award odds for Ryu have bumped up to +210 and could rise further as extra rest may compound pitching woes with the Dodgers’ plan for the post season. His won-loss record has fallen to 12-5.
Max Scherzer now the betting favorite for the NL Cy Young Odds
Washington Nationals ace Max Scherzer is moving closer to his All Star form, striking out eight Orioles in his second start back from the injured list. Though his appearance ended after 4.2 innings and 89 pitches, he fanned eight and gave up two runs on six hits and a walk in the eventual Nats victory over the hapless birds. Even on a pitch count, he has now notched 200 strikeouts for the eighth straight season; only Tom Seaver has a longer streak. Scherzer’s career résumé and his return to form are reasons the odds for a Max Scerzer Cy Young have fallen to +145, leading the pack. Scherzer sits at 9-5 with a 2.46 ERA.
deGrom to face Scherzer in battle between two NL Cy Young favorites
In a battle among the CY Young frontrunners, Scherzer is set to face Jacob deGrom in DC. The Met hurler is 8-8 with a 2.66 ERA and 216 strikeouts on the season. deGrom lost his last start against the Cubs, 4-1, giving up two bombs to catcher Victor Caratini, accounting for all four runs. The NY ace did strike out seven in seven innings. As the award race tightens, deGrom’s odds have fallen to +180.
