Houston Astros Odds
The Astros have lost four in a row — all to the Los Angeles Angels, who have moved within five games of second-place Houston in the American League West. Now the Astros face the division’s first-place occupant as Houston and the Oakland Athletics will play a four-day, five-game series, with a doubleheader on Tuesday.
Originally scheduled as a three-game set, games were added because two games in the clubs’ most recent head-to-head in Houston were postponed, one by a player protest against racial injustice and the other by a positive coronavirus test on the Oakland side.
The Astros will serve as the home team twice in this series. Houston will be without Jose Altuve (sprained right knee, injured list) and perhaps Alex Bregman (strained hamstring, though eligible to come off injured list), as well. Josh Reddick (bruised elbow), who crashed into the outfield fall in Anaheim on Sunday, is considered day-to-day.
Oakland Athletics Odds
The A’s lost star third baseman Matt Chapman to a strained right hip during Sunday’s 5-3 home loss to the San Diego Padres, who took two of three in the interleague series. Chapman was scheduled for an MRI exam on Monday, and is unlikely to play in this series.
The A’s hope to get Marcus Semien (pain in left side) back at some point over the course of the four days. The A’s have won three of five from the Houston Astros this season, with the home team having won all five times. This series completes the season series, meaning the A’s will have played eight of 10 against the Astros this season on their home field.
The A’s have played just three games in the last eight days due to being quarantined in Houston. They totaled 11 runs in those three games against the Padres, with most of them coming in an 8-4 win Saturday.
Astros vs. Athletics Betting Pick on September 7, 2020
Neither team enters the series with any momentum, so the team that wants it more likely will have the advantage. That appears to be Oakland this season, with the banged-up Astros demonstrating in Los Angeles over the weekend that they’re apparently willing to take their chances in the postseason as a second-place finisher this year.
Astros at Athletics Betting Pick: Astros (+132), Athletics (-155)
Athletics 6, Astros 4
Astros at Athletics Best Bet for September 7, 2020
One team is missing its shortstop and third baseman. The other is missing its second and third basemen. Will either team be able to pick up a ground ball Monday? Both teams have seen the other’s pitcher recently, and that should give the hitters the edge. So should a bunch of errors.
Astros at Athletics Best Bet: Astros-Athletics over 9 1/2 runs (-104)
