Pirates at Reds Betting Preview: Pirates (+192), Reds (-225)
Pittsburgh Pirates
The Pirates will look to avoid their eighth straight loss in Wednesday’s series finale. Pittsburgh’s lone run in a 4-1 defeat Tuesday came in the fourth inning, when Colin Moran singled home Ke’Bryan Hayes, who doubled one batter earlier.
Rookie right-hander JT Brubaker (1-1, 5.34 ERA) is set to start for Pittsburgh in his first career appearance against Cincinnati. Brubaker struggled through the roughest outing of the season to date in his most recent start Sept. 9, taking the loss after allowing seven runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings against the Chicago White Sox.
Brubaker hadn’t yielded more than three runs in any of his previous seven outings (five starts). He also surrendered two home runs, the first time he served up multiple round-trippers in a game.
Cincinnati Reds
Cincinnati earned its season-high fourth straight victory Tuesday with help from Tucker Barnhart’s fourth home run of the season, a solo shot leading off the second inning.
The Reds have outscored opponents 26-11 during the streak while climbing to ninth place in the National League, one game behind the San Francisco Giants for the NL’s final playoff spot.
Right-hander Luis Castillo (2-5, 3.44 ERA) tossed a complete-game two-hitter at St. Louis in his most recent start, allowing one run with three walks and six strikeouts on Friday. In nine career starts against the Pirates, Castillo is 3-3 with a 3.00 ERA with 51 strikeouts in 51 innings.
