St. Louis Cardinals Odds
For now, an extremely crowded schedule has done nothing to hurt St. Louis’ playoff chances. The Cardinals’ 7-3 win Sunday night at Wrigley was their third straight in the teams’ five-game series, slicing their National League Central deficit to 1 1/2 games on the fast-fading Cubs.
For the series and season finale Monday with Chicago, the Cardinals send rookie right-hander Johan Oviedo to the mound. He pitched well in his MLB debut Aug. 19 against the Cubs at Wrigley, allowing two hits and two runs in five innings and leaving with a lead before the bullpen gave it up in a 5-4 setback. Oviedo owns a 4.30 ERA in three starts but a WHIP of 0.95.
Chicago Cubs Odds
Their bullpen further worn down by another short start, this one by Jon Lester on Sunday night, the Cubs badly need an outing of length from Kyle Hendricks. The good news for Chicago is that Hendricks usually pitches well against St. Louis, especially at Wrigley Field.
A 3-1 loss to the Cardinals Aug. 17 was no exception, because St. Louis managed only three hits and three runs in 6 1/3 innings against Hendricks. And he turned the tables on a recent skid by throwing six good innings Wednesday night in an 8-2 win at Pittsburgh.
His home ERA (2.60) is half that of his road ERA (5.24), which means the Cubs should get his best work in a big game.
Cardinals at Cubs Betting Pick for September 7, 2020
After playing as an extreme hitters’ park Sunday night with winds blowing straight out at around 20 mph, Wrigley will become a pitchers’ park on Monday with the wind expected to be blowing in from the lake at 10 mph. That figures to favor Hendricks and the Cubs in a pressure spot.
Cardinals at Cubs Betting Pick: Cardinals (+155), Cubs (-186)
Cubs 4, Cardinals 2
Cardinals at Cubs Best Bet for September 7, 2020
When Chicago has been a moneyline favorite between -150 and -200 this year, it owns a 6-2 record. Most of the year, particularly in the first 20 games when they were playing so well, the Cubs took care of business. The odds and Hendricks’ past history of shutting down St. Louis suggest a victory on Labor Day.
Cardinals at Cubs Best Bet: Take the Cubs (-186).
