Cincinnati Reds Odds
Cincinnati is one of the biggest disappointments in baseball this year, but Wednesday night’s starting pitcher isn’t to blame. Trevor Bauer is posting the best numbers of his career, entering the game with a 2.05 ERA, a league-leading 0.86 WHIP and a strikeout-walk ratio of nearly 5-1.
Bauer has fanned 61 batters in just 44 innings over seven starts, permitting only 25 hits in that span. That he’s dropped his last three starts and is just 3-3 for the year is less a reflection of him and more a reflection of the Reds’ inconsistent offense.
Bauer is aiming to avenge a 3-0 loss to the Cubs on Aug. 29, when he allowed three runs in 5 1/3 innings.
Chicago Cubs Odds
Bauer would be the Cy Young favorite if it weren’t for the guy he’s facing on Wednesday night. Yu Darvish is 6-0 over his past seven starts and boasts a lower ERA than Bauer at 1.44 while nearly matching his otherworldly WHIP at 0.88.
In his past seven starts, which have seen him go 7-0, Darvish has allowed five runs in 46 innings for a 0.98 ERA. That includes a 3-0 win in a matchup with Bauer 12 days ago, when he scattered seven hits in six shutout innings while whiffing eight.
The formerly wild right-hander has issued just eight walks in 50 innings while striking out 63.
Reds at Cubs Betting Pick for September 9
Games that look like great pitchers’ duels at the start don’t always turn out that way three hours later. This one should live up to the hype, especially with the wind predicted to blow in from right field on Wednesday night. Three runs figures to be enough to win this one.
Reds at Cubs Betting Pick: Reds (+125), Cubs (-148)
Cubs 3, Reds 2
Field Level Media‘s Best Bet
While the Chicago offense hits a lot of homers and does a good job of drawing walks, the Cubs also hit for a poor average and strike out continually.
Bauer certainly has the stuff to rack up double-figure K’s in this one, and if he’s matching location with power, contact might be in short supply for the home team.
Reds at Cubs Best Bet: Take Bauer to post more than 9 1/2 strikeouts.
