The Astros’ Roster and Farm Continues to Supply the Best Players: AL Rookie of the Year Odds
This was supposed to be the year of the juniors. Vladimir Guerrero in the AL, Fernando Tatis in the NL. It wasn’t if they would both get called up and make an impact it was when, with a Rookie of the Year Award sure to follow. They were the money favorites and had the brightest upside.
And then the season started.
We patiently waited out the Blue Jays as they held Guerrero in the minors for two weeks to rob him of an extra year of service time so they could get a seventh year of team control. He’s turned in a solid rookie season, hitting in the .270-.280 range, should connect for 20 homers and 70+ RBI. His biggest moment, of course, came in the epic Home Run Derby at the All-Star Game, which allowed fans to see the immense promise he has.
Speaking of rookie AL All-Stars, we had Brandon Lowe, who emerged as Guerrero’s best challenger. An injury derailed his season and he is currently on the 60-day IL, derailing his chances.
Those two dominated the mid-summer classic as far as rookie award discussion and there was a tip of the cap to Balitmore’s John Means and Eloy Jimenez of the White Sox. Not much attention was paid to a Houston callup when they needed a bat to cover Carlos Correa in the lineup after he went down with a rib injury.

Jordan Alvarez’s AL Rookie of the Year Odds
Jordan Alvarez wasn’t in the top half of most preseason top-100 prospects lists, if he was on them at all. He was a part of the field if you wanted to “bet the field” to win the AL Rookie of the Year instead of a Guerrero, Lowe, Means, Jimenez, or Bo Bichette. When he hit .317 in June with seven homers and 21 RBI in 16 games and was named the AL Rookie of the Month, it was more filed under the “cool story, bro” category, and still not seen as a serious threat to win the year-end prize. It made sense, given that, while he’d shown some pop, he hit just .259 in AAA before his callup. Good story, worth a headline, wouldn’t last.
Except it did. He hit .333 in July and won the Rookie of the Month Award again. Then .309 in August with nine homers and 26 RBI and a third straight monthly honor. He’s become an indispensable cog in the Astros lineup and the latest in their homegrown talent pipeline that’s included Correa, Jose Altuve, Alex Bregman, and George Springer.
Midseason call up or not, Alvarez has earned this award. At this point, one of the few remaining questions in his season is will he getting fitted for a ring as well?
