New York Yankees AL East Betting Preview
New York Yankees Over/under: 101.5 wins
New York Yankees Odds to win Division: -360
New York Yankees Odds to win League: +165
New York Yankees Odds to win World Series: +350
The Yankees are the cream of the crop in the AL East, making the playoffs in each of the past three seasons. They finally surpassed Boston last season to win the division for the first time since 2012. They are favored to do that yet again.
The Yankees’ win total over/under of 101.5 seems a bit high. They won 103 games last season and 100 the year before. They haven’t won more than 101.5 games in back-to-back seasons since, well, 1936 and 1937. They’ve come close (100 and 103 in the last two seasons, 101 in each of 2003 and 2004) but have yet to accomplish the feat.
Betting on the under 101.5 wins seems like the best option.
Tampa Bay Rays AL East Betting Preview
Tampa Bay Rays Over/under: 91.5 wins
Tampa Bay Rays Odds to win Division: +450
Tampa Bay Rays Odds to win League: +1000
Tampa Bay Rays Odds to win World Series: +2200
While the Yankees are the favorites to win the division, the Tampa Bay Rays are their main threat.
They have emerged from the ashes in recent years with 80, 90, and 96 wins in the last three seasons, respectively. They forced a fifth game in the ALDS against the Astros in the playoffs last season after winning the Wild Card Game against the Athletics.
The Rays are led by a strong pitching staff, highlighted by 2018 AL Cy Young Winner Blake Snell. They also have Charlie Morton and Tyler Glasnow to round out their big three. They don’t have any offensive superstars, but the addition of power-hitting outfielder Hunter Renfroe will help their lineup. They have a well-rounded offensive attack with Brandon Lowe projected to lead it off.
The win total of 91.5 seems a tad high for the Rays, and if I had to bet, I’d bet on the under. However, the best bet for the Rays would be for them to win the division at +450. The Yankees are already ravaged by injuries and the Rays could sneak in and win the AL East.
The Boston Red Sox AL East Betting Preview
Boston Red Sox Over/under: 85.5 wins
Boston Red Sox Odds to win Division: +600
Boston Red Sox Odds to win League: +1100
Boston Red Sox Odds to win World Series: +2500
This is going to be an interesting season for the Boston Red Sox.
The departure of Mookie Betts is a big loss for the Red Sox, who didn’t really get much back in terms of MLB-ready players in the deal.
The Red Sox still have J.D. Martinez in the heart of the order and young guns Rafael Devers and Michael Chavis, but the loss of Betts puts a hole in their lineup. They now have an outfield of Andrew Benintendi, Jackie Bradley Jr., and Kevin Pillar, which isn’t great.
The Red Sox were the class of the division from 2016-18, putting up 93, 93, and 108 wins in those seasons. However, they faltered last year with just 84 wins.
With their offseason departures and lack of additions, bet on under 85.5 wins here.
The Toronto Blue Jays AL East Betting Preview
Toronto Blue Jays Over/under: 74.5 wins
Toronto Blue Jays Odds to win Division: +3300
Toronto Blue Jays Odds to win League: +5000
Toronto Blue Jays Odds to win World Series: +10000
The Toronto Blue Jays have been on a steady decline over the past five years.
They won 93 games (and the AL East) in 2015 and 89 games (and made it to the ALCS for the second straight year) in 2016 but have failed to reach the .500 mark in each of the past three seasons. They won 76 games, 73 games, and 67 games in the last three years, respectively.
The Blue Jays went out this offseason to try to put a stop to that slide. They signed two depth starting pitchers in Tanner Roark and Chase Anderson, but their offseason was headlined by signing Hyun-Jin Ryu, the 2019 NL Cy Young runner up.
If the Blue Jays can get good pitching, the up-and-coming offensive stars of Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Bo Bichette and Cavan Biggio could help carry this team to at least 75 wins – and perhaps a few more.
Bet on the over 74.5 wins here for the Blue Jays.
Baltimore Orioles AL East Betting Preview
Over/under: 56.5 wins
Odds to win Division: +50000
Odds to win League: +35000
Odds to win World Series: +75000
The Baltimore Orioles are in for another long summer.
They have combined to win just 101 games over the past two seasons: 47 in 2018 and 54 in 2019. So they are on the incline, but can they take another step this year?
The starting rotation is full of mostly nobodies, with John Means and Alex Cobb at the top. Their offense revolves around outfielder Trey Mancini… and… unfortunately… hoping that Chris Davis can get a hit once in a while.
It’s mostly negative for the Orioles, but 57 wins is not that many. In a weaker division with the Red Sox taking a step back, they might be able to get there. I would recommend staying away from the Orioles, but after increasing their win total by seven last year, I could see them getting three more for the over 56.5 wins this year.
