Tampa Bay Vipers at New York Guardians
Tampa Bay Vipers Preview
Former Chicago Bears and CFL head coach Marc Trestman leads the Tampa Bay Vipers into their inaugural season, and he‘ll ride Tampa native Aaron Murray as his starting quarterback. Murray, a former Georgia star, never stuck in the NFL but played for the AAF‘s Atlanta Legends, throwing for 1,048 yards with three touchdowns and seven interceptions.
Expected top target Antonio Callaway landed on injured reserve, leaving the top wideouts as Jalen Tolliver and Reece Horn. Former Michigan running back De‘Veon Smith will carry the load, and fellow NFL‘ers Deiontrez Mount and Nikita Whitlock lead the way on the defensive line. Whitlock, a former New York Giant, played both fullback and defensive tackle in the NFL.
New York Guardians Preview
Longtime Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride makes his return to coaching New York football as the Guardians debut against the Vipers. Gilbride will rely on former NFL quarterback Matt McGloin, who spent four years with the Oakland Raiders after going undrafted out of Penn State in 2013. McGloin has some weapons, including Mekale McKay, who starred for the AAF‘s San Antonio Commanders last spring.
Also on the roster is wideout Joe Horn Jr., son of the four-time NFL Pro Bowler. Leading New York‘s defense will be former NFL linebacker Ben Heeney and cornerback Jamar Summers, who impressed for the AAF‘s Birmingham Iron.
