Shrewsbury Town vs Liverpool

Liverpool Odds Against Shrewsbury Town

Shrewsbury Town’s remarkable run to the fourth round of the FA Cup this season has seen them be awarded the opportunity to host the European and World Champions that is Liverpool FC.

The League One side has knocked off Bradford City, Mansfield Town, and Bristol City on their way to this stage of the competition and will play their biggest game in years against the current Premier League leaders.

This is the second consecutive year that Shrewsbury has made it to the fourth round of the FA Cup after narrowly losing 5-4 on aggregate to Premier League side Wolves in the fourth round last year.

Liverpool, who entered the competition in the third round, defeated Merseyside rivals Everton in the second Merseyside derby of the season where boyhood Liverpool fan Curtis Jones scored a wonder-goal that was enough to see Liverpool through to the next round.

Liverpool is on a tear at the minute, they’ve won 14 straight league games whilst possessing a 16-point lead over Manchester City in second place. The Reds need to win just nine of their remaining 14 games to be crowned Premier League Champions for the first time.

Liverpool FA Cup Odds Against Shrewsbury Town

The FA Cup provides another competition where Jurgen Klopp can rest his stars and play the promising youth that lies within the Liverpool youth system.

The likes of Neco Williams, Harvey Elliot, Yasser Larouci and Curtis Jones are poised to start for Liverpool on Sunday as well as senior players returning from injuries such as Fabinho, Dejan Lovren, and Joel Matip.

Shrewsbury haven’t been so prosperous this season. They sit 16th in League One with eight wins, ten draws and seven losses in 25 games.

They’ve struggled massively with goals with just 24 goals in 25 games, the second least in the division only trailing Bolton Wanderers who’ve scored just 19 goals all season.

They’re not exactly high on confidence having not won a league match in five. The two clubs have met just once before when Liverpool defeated Shrewsbury Town 4-0 in the FA Cup in 1996. Will history repeat itself?

Sportsbooks odds on Liverpool advancing to the fifth round opens at -225, making them favorites. Odds on Shrewsbury Town claiming a huge scalp in Liverpool opens at +550, according to sportsbooks. Odds on a draw that will result in a fourth-round replay opens at +400.

How Far Can Liverpool’s Youth Go in This Competition?

We’ve seen Liverpool’s youth predominately play in both the Carabao Cup and FA Cup this season and they’ve impressed. Despite a 5-0 loss to Aston Villa that saw them crash out of the Carabao Cup quarterfinals, the kids showed fight, and, on another day, they may have taken the chances they’ve created.

All the big boys remain in the competition, however, if Liverpool were to progress on Sunday, you may see Klopp choose a stronger line-up if the likelihood of a trophy is stronger.

However, until then, we’ll see the youth play in a tricky fixture. They’re away from home and sides from the lower divisions will have a hostile crowd and have nothing to lose as these current Shrewsbury Town players look to claim the biggest win of their careers.
