Houston Roughnecks at Tampa Bay Vipers

Houston Roughnecks Preview

The Houston Roughnecks look to improve to 3-0 on Saturday at Tampa Bay behind red-hot quarterback PJ Walker. The former Indianapolis Colts signal-caller threw for only 170 yards last week but tossed three touchdown passes in a 28-24 win over St. Louis, bringing his season total to a league-best seven.

Walker also ranks third in passing yardage with 449, and his 107.4 passer rating is the league’s best. Wideout Cam Phillips has been Walker’s favorite target, snaring 12 catches for 130 yards and a league-high four touchdowns, including all three last week. On defense, the Roughnecks have intercepted two passes in each game thus far.

Tampa Bay Vipers Preview

The Tampa Bay Vipers hope to avoid an 0-3 hole when they host Houston on Saturday. The Vipers desperately need offense, having scored only 12 points through two games, six of which came on defense in a 17-9 loss at Seattle last week. With starter Aaron Murray out due to a foot injury, quarterbacks Taylor Cornelius and Quinton Flowers combined to go 19 of 34 for 172 yards and three interceptions in the latest defeat.

Murray’s status remains shaky as he missed practice this week. On the bright side, Tampa Bay has two of the league’s top five rushers in De’Veon Smith (125 yards) and Jacques Patrick (105), with both averaging at least 4.6 yards per carry.
