Pittsburgh Panthers at Syracuse Orange

Pittsburgh Panthers Odds

The Pittsburgh Panthers have posted back-to-back Atlantic Coast Conference wins (North Carolina, Boston College) for the first time since February 2017. Second-year coach Jeff Capel started to build something last season around guards Trey McGowens and Xavier Johnson, and the sophomores are leading the scoring parade this season with averages of 13.4 and 12.0 points, respectively.

McGowens already has topped 100 career steals, while Johnson — who has started all 52 games in his career — matched his career high with 10 assists vs. Boston College. Athletic freshman wing Justin Champagnie has raised the team’s level of play with a team-leading four double-doubles. The Panthers will try to stop a five-game losing streak to Syracuse.

Syracuse Orange Odds

The Syracuse Orange have won four consecutive games, their best stretch against Atlantic Coast Conference competition since winning five in a row during the 2016-17 season. Their traditional 2-3 zone is doing what it usually does — dragging out long possessions from opponents, who end up settling for a 3-point shot while making just 30.8 percent.

An amazing 51.3 percent of opponents’ shots come from beyond the arc — the highest such percentage in the nation. (Saturday’s foe, Pitt, makes just 30.5 percent from 3-point range.) This Syracuse team is flashing more offense than in recent seasons, with Elijah Hughes averaging 19.7 points and Buddy Boeheim at 15.9. The two have combined to hit 124 of 314 (39.5 percent) from 3-point land.
