Liverpool host Southampton on Saturday afternoon after securing their 15th league win in a row during midweek as they defeated West Ham United 2-0 on Wednesday night.

Sadio Mane missed the game through injury as Divock Origi started in place of the Senegalese winger. And, it was Origi who won Liverpool a penalty which Mohamed Salah subsequently dispatched to open the scoring in the first half.

It was Salah’s 12th league goal of the season, making him Liverpool’s top scorer ahead of Mane with 11 goals. In the second half, Salah’s well-placed through ball found Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain who struck home with his second league goal of the season as Liverpool doubled their lead.

The result ended 2-0 as Liverpool took advantage of their game in hand as they now go 19 points clear of Manchester City and have beaten every team in a league campaign for the first time in their history.

Liverpool and the rest of the Premier League will enjoy a two-week winter break for the first time in league history, but before that, Liverpool host Southampton in what could be their 16th league win in a row.

Liverpool Odds Against a Resurgent Southampton Squad

Southampton looked destined for relegation after their humiliating 9-0 home loss to Leicester City earlier this season. The future of head coach Ralph Hasenhuttl and many of their players were on the cards after that embarrassing performance but they’ve remarkably stepped up since then.

It was a watershed moment as they went on to win seven of their last 14 games and risen to 9th in the Premier League after being resigned to the bottom three for most of the season.

Southampton has lost just one of their seven games and won three of their last four including a 2-0 away win at Crystal Palace in their previous outing.

Southampton star Danny Ings makes his first return to Liverpool since moving from Anfield to Southampton last summer. Ings netted in the return fixture back in August and will be looking to add to his 14 league goals against his former side.

Liverpool is unbeaten in their last six league meetings against Southampton with five wins in a row as well as one draw. Southampton’s last win against Liverpool in the league came in a 3-2 win in 2016; a game Sadio Mane netted twice as a Southampton player.

Sportsbooks odds on another Liverpool win opens at -350, making them clear favorites. Odds on a Southampton win opens at +900, according to sportsbooks. Odds on a draw between the two sides opens at +450.

Where can Liverpool Strengthen in the Summer?

You have to remember; Liverpool made no major purchases last summer and this is the level they are performing at. Despite suffering from multiple injuries to key players like Fabinho, Alisson and Joel Matip during the season, Liverpool’s improved squad depth proved vital during parts of the season.

However, constant injuries to the likes of Matip, Naby Keita and Oxlade-Chamberlain has left Liverpool’s midfield in dire straits at times. Lack of dynamic options at the forward position could leave Liverpool in a position of vulnerability if one of their front three of Salah, Firmino or Mane were to be out of action for a prolonged period.

The likes of Timo Werner, Kai Havertz and Sandro Tonali have been earmarked as targets reportedly and would help further Liverpool’s dominance.
