Houston Cougars Preview

The Houston Cougars have recorded 20 victories in a season for the 26th time in school history. They have reached 20 wins in five consecutive seasons for the first time in program history. The Cougars have posted an 80-17 record since the 2017-18 season. Only Gonzaga (90), Virginia (82) and Duke (82) have more wins than Houston over the past three seasons.

Redshirt freshman guard Caleb Mills ranks second on the Cougars at 12.6 points per game, trailing team leader Quentin Grimes, a sophomore, by only 0.08 points per game. Rob Williams was the only freshman to lead a Houston team in season scoring, averaging 16.3 points per game in 1979-80.

SMU Mustangs Preview

The SMU Mustangs are leading the AAC in field-goal percentage (.462), free-throw percentage (.768), assists (16.7 per game), assist-to-turnover ratio (1.27) and 3-pointers made (198) and 3-point shooting percentage (.354). The Mustangs have three of the top 10 scorers in the AAC — Kendric Davis (15.9 points a game), Tyson Jolly (14.4) and Isiaha Mike (14).

Davis is also leading the league in assists (7.3 a game) and assist-to-turnover ratio (2.88). SMU, which does not have any seniors this season, has rallied from a double-digit deficit to win three times in 2020, at Vanderbilt on Jan. 4, against Temple on Jan. 18 and at Memphis on Jan. 25.
