Atlanta Falcons at San Francisco 49ers

Atlanta Falcons Preview

The Atlanta Falcons will be looking for a third straight road win when they visit the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. The Falcons surprised the New Orleans Saints and then thumped the Carolina Panthers in consecutive road outings last month, before returning home and losing two straight, including a rematch with the Saints. They avoided a winless three-game homestand with a 40-20 win over the Panthers last Sunday, only their third game this season with more than 30 points. The Falcons suffered two key injuries in last week’s win, losing wideout Calvin Ridley (abdominal injury) and cornerback Desmond Trufant (broken arm) for the rest of the season. The Falcons haven’t won at San Francisco since 2009.

San Francisco 49ers Preview

The San Francisco 49ers get a break from the heavyweight portion of their schedule when they host the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. The 49ers (11-2) have the best record in the NFC, after handing beating New Orleans 48-46 in a thriller. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week for his four-touchdown performance. The 49ers can clinch a playoff berth, their first since 2013, with a win. The 49ers lost more key pieces last week, as Richard Sherman (hamstring), Dee Ford (hamstring) and Weston Richburg (knee, IR) will all miss significant time. The game matches 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan with the franchise that employed him as an offensive coordinator, and Niners right tackle Mike McGlinchey with his cousin, Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan.
