Chelsea FC vs Tottenham Hotspur

By: Fasika Zelealem

Chelsea host an in-form Tottenham Hotspur side where just a draw for the away side will see them propel into fourth over their opponents.

Chelsea has occupied the fourth spot for much of the season, however, bad results coupled with an upturn in form for several top-four rivals means the top-four race has gotten a whole lot interesting this season.

Chelsea lost 2-0 to Manchester United in their last match in what was a contentious match with two goals for Chelsea disallowed via VAR. Chelsea also lost N’Golo Kante and Andreas Christensen to injury during the match to add to their injury problems.

Chelsea also felt aggrieved during the match after Harry Maguire was not sent off after kicking out at Michy Batshuayi. Maguire ended up doubling United’s 1-0 lead in the second half to add insult to injury.

The Blues have now lost nine league games this season, which is the second-highest in the top half of the table; only Everton have lost more games with 10.

They are just a point ahead of Tottenham Hotspur who are on a hot streak. Spurs have won three league games in a row for the first time this season to reignite a top-four berth this season.

Still, without Harry Kane, the club needed someone to step up in his absence and Heung-Min Son has done just that. He has four goals in his last three games including a 94th-minute winner against Aston Villa in a game where he scored twice.

Chelsea Odds While Dealing with a Rash of Injuries

Chelsea’s injury problems are toppling as the weeks go by. With Christian Pulisic still out after suffering a setback two weeks ago, top scorer Tammy Abraham missed out today after carrying an injury. Callum Hudson-Odoi and Emerson both were absent for the game against United after getting injured during Chelsea’s winter break.

Now, Kante and Christensen will join the aforementioned players on the treatment table after coming off with an injury in Monday’s loss.

After years of Chelsea’s dominance over Tottenham in the Premier League, things are a little more equal between the two London clubs when they face off against each other.

In their last six league games, Chelsea has won three and lost three. However, Chelsea has won the last three games in all competitions including a 2-0 victory at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last December.

Sportsbooks odds on a third consecutive league win over Spurs open at -125, making them favorites. Odds on a Spurs win that could see them overtake Chelsea in the table open at +300, according to sportsbooks. Odds on a tie open at +300.

Could Chelsea’s Injury Crisis See Them Miss Out on the Top Four?

Chelsea’s stuttering form of late is no doubt down to their growing injury crisis. Coupled with that, despite their successful appeal to the Court of Arbitration of Sport over their transfer ban, they elected to not bring in anybody this particular window.

They did purchase Hakim Ziyech from Ajax but his arrival in England will occur in the summer.

With Tottenham’s improvement under Jose Mourinho as well as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer Manchester United defeating Chelsea for the third time this season, Chelsea is in big danger of missing out on a Champions League spot that they’ve been in for much of the season.
