Chelsea vs Liverpool

Liverpool Odds Against Chelsea

Liverpool travels to Stamford Bridge to face rivals, Chelsea, in the FA Cup fifth round.

Liverpool is coming off their first loss in the Premier League this season after a shocking 3-0 defeat against Watford on Saturday evening. The loss ended Liverpool’s chances of an undefeated season and their 44-game unbeaten run while they remain on course for a first-ever Premier League title.

It was a poor performance from Liverpool and an impressive one from Watford who rose from the relegation zone with the win. Liverpool must bounce back and quick with their clash against Chelsea on Tuesday.

Liverpool last reached beyond the fifth round in the FA Cup in the 2014/15 season under Brendan Rodgers where they lost 2-1 in the FA Cup semi-finals to Aston Villa. Chelsea reached the fifth round of the competition and last won it in the 2017/18 season via an Eden Hazard goal against Manchester United in a 1-0 win.

We’ve seen Liverpool rotate significantly in previous rounds of the competition, but they now find themselves in the fifth round against a top-class Premier League side and I predict we see a strong side selected by Jurgen Klopp.

The loss against Watford, while a disappointing one but may reignite their season and their taste for trophies. Chelsea, despite a change in strategy following the appointment of Frank Lampard, remains a club that is known for winning trophies and that hasn’t changed in Lampard’s hiring or the number of young players starting for the London club.

The Super Surprising Liverpool Odds Against Chelsea

Maurizio Sarri had never won a major trophy in his professional managerial career before his Europa League triumph with Chelsea last year and Lampard will be aiming to follow his footsteps with an FA Cup win; a trophy he won three times as a Chelsea player.

Liverpool has the advantage when it comes to previous meetings with three straight wins against Chelsea in all competitions. Liverpool defeated Chelsea on penalties in the UEFA Super Cup at the beginning of the season and followed that up with a 2-1 win in the league a month later. Chelsea has just two wins against Liverpool in all competitions since 2015.

Sportsbooks odds on a Liverpool win open at +120, where they surprisingly come in as the underdogs. Odds on a Chelsea win open at -163, according to sportsbooks. Odds on the game ending in a tie at full time which will result in extra-time and penalties open at +300.

Could We See a Stronger Liverpool Side in the Latter Rounds of the Cup?

Klopp has stuck to a strict line-up of youth and fringe first-team players in both domestic cups. Liverpool can go through to the quarterfinals with a win against Chelsea and with a fully fit squad, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp may look to play a stronger line-up than previous rounds.

However, with the remaining league games and Liverpool’s Champions League ties, Klopp may retain faith in the young players and grant them more experience that can only help them not heed them.
