Chelsea Odds Against Aston Villa
After a weekend home loss to West Ham United, Chelsea lost two consecutive league games for the first time this season. Top scorer Tammy Abraham suffered a hip injury during Chelsea’s Champions League draw against Valencia and was unable to play against West Ham.
His absence was much felt with Chelsea failing to score a goal in just their second match all season; the first game being the opening 4-0-day loss to Manchester United.
Chelsea has now dropped to fourth in the table but remains six points ahead of Tottenham Hotspur, who won their third consecutive game today under new manager Jose Mourinho.
The packed Christmas schedule is beginning to rear its head and Chelsea must beware of falling into a bad run of form after two consecutive league losses sandwiched between a Champions League draw against Valencia that saw them drop to third in their group.
How Manchester City Odds Stack Up Against Aston Villa
They come up against an Aston Villa side who claimed a valuable point against Manchester United at Old Trafford despite being 2-1 down. Villa captain Jack Grealish scored a stunning goal to open the scoring before United struck twice to go 2-1 up. Tyrone Mings netted two minutes after United’s second goal and gained a point that could prove massive down the line.
Chelsea last faced Aston Villa in the league in 2016 where Villa lost 4-0 at home to Chelsea’s title-winning team in the 2015/16 Premier League season; the same season Villa finished bottom of the league and were contenders for one of the worst Premier League teams of all-time.
Villa have just one win in their last six league games against Chelsea and infamously lost 8-0 to Chelsea in December 2012; the result used to be the joint-largest win in Premier League history before Leicester City’s 9-0 win over Southampton earlier on this season.
Sportsbooks’ therefore have odds on a Chelsea home win opening at -400, making them clear favorites. Odds on an Aston Villa win open at +1200. Odds on a tie between the teams open at +450.
Christian Pulisic- An American Dynamo
The American has five league goals this season and despite an injury suffered against Crystal Palace, Pulisic returned to the starting line-up at home against West Ham United and put in an uninspiring performance against West Ham in a 1-0 loss for Chelsea.
With top scorer Tammy Abraham out with a hip injury, Pulisic will be asked to take on more of the goalscoring burden.
It could be a struggle for Pulisic who four years into his professional career hasn’t made a name of himself as a goal scorer; however, this could be the evolution of Pulisic as a star.
For Aston Villa, this is the mid-point of three tough fixtures that ends with a home fixture against Leicester City on the 8th of December. Villa then has four huge fixtures that they must get results from if they want to remain in the Premier League.
Chelsea has two more London derbies in their next six games against Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal and will prove big tests in their attempt to defeat one of the Premier League’s big boys; a feat that Frank Lampard and his men have yet to achieve.
