Los Angeles Chargers at Oakland Raiders

Los Angeles Chargers Odds

For one week, anyway, the firing of Ken Whisenhunt as offensive coordinator worked. Interim OC Shane Steichen brought back the running game Whisenhunt couldn’t or wouldn’t establish most of the season’s first half, as Los Angeles got a season-high 80 yards on 20 carries from Melvin Gordon. Given that kind of balance, quarterback Philip Rivers carved up Green Bay for 294 yards on 21 of 28 passing. On a short week, it would be pretty useful if the Chargers cranked up the ground game early and gave Rivers the chance to hit deep balls off play-action, as he was able to against the Packers.

Oakland Raiders Odds

Coach Jon Gruden has always loved to run the ball, even though his reputation to the casual fan might be of an offensive mind who prefers to pass. Oakland is sixth in the NFL in rushing this year, thanks largely to rookie Josh Jacobs, who’s on pace to run for nearly 1,500 yards. It’s probably not a coincidence that quarterback David Carr is completing 71.2 percent of his passes in a bounceback year and has thrown only four interceptions in 250 attempts. The Raiders’ defense still lacks playmakers, but they’re fighting on more even terms because of the offense’s drastic improvement.
