No. 19 Butler Bulldogs Preview
The Butler Bulldogs (18-5, 6-4 Big East) defeated Marquette 89-85 in overtime at Indianapolis on Jan. 24 behind Kamar Baldwinâ€™s 31 points — 29 produced after halftime. Baldwin is sixth on Butler’s career scoring list with 1,821 points. Through Thursday’s games, Butler’s eight NET Quad 1 wins trail only Kansas (nine). Baylor, Maryland and Seton Hall each have seven.
The Bulldogs have out-rebounded 18 of their 23 opponents this season after out-rebounding only 10 of 33 in 2018-19. Butler’s field-goal percentage defense (.382) ranks 16th nationally. Butler committed only six turnovers in Wednesday’s win over Villanova. It was the team’s 10th game this season with 10 or fewer turnovers.
Marquette Golden Eagles Preview
The Marquette Golden Eagles (16-6, 6-4) are fourth in the nation with an average of 29.9 defensive rebounds per game. It is truly a team effort, because the Golden Eagles do not have a player contributing more than 6.0 rebounds per game. Forward Brendan Bailey leads the team with 5.6 boards.
Over the last four games, transfer guard Koby McEwen has contributed 13.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game while shooting 24 of 29 (82.8 percent) from the free-throw line, including 20 of 24 over the last two games. Senior guard Markus Howard became the 72nd player in NCAA history to reach 2,500 points in his career. He stands at 2,541.
