Aston Villa vs Manchester City

Manchester City Odds Against Aston Villa

Manchester City looks to win their third consecutive Carabao Cup trophy and their fourth in five years as they face fellow Premier League club Aston Villa to their fourth Carabao Cup Final in five years on Sunday.

Manchester City has the second most wins of the league cup with six and can take to seven with a win while Aston Villa has won the joint-third most league cup with five and will be taking part in their first final of the competition since 2010 where they lost 2-1 to Manchester United.

City enters the game on the back of what is arguably their biggest ever European win. After falling 1-0 to Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu, City equalized through a Gabriel Jesus before Madrid captain Sergio Ramos was sent off and Dani Carvajal gave away a penalty after fouling Raheem Sterling in the box.

Kevin De Bruyne scored the subsequent penalty and they take a 2-1 lead back to Manchester where City remain favorites to win the UEFA Champions League.

They now have the opportunity to clinch their first bit of silverware of the season and face an Aston Villa side who knocked off four Premier League sides on route to the final.

Villa claimed the scalps of Brighton and Hove Albion, Wolves, Liverpool and Leicester City for their first league cup final in 10 years. The Premier League newcomers are huge underdogs in the game and their poor form going into the final hasn’t helped.

They’ve lost their last three games and sit just one point above the relegation zone. Villa’s last league cup win was in the 1995/96 season where they defeated Leeds United to lift their second league cup trophy in three years.

Man City Odds to Make Some History

Manchester City can become the first since 1984 and only the second team ever to win three league cups’ in a row after Liverpool won four straight from 1981 to 1984.

While City will feel hugely confident, their record against Aston Villa only justifies City’s odds to win the trophy. They’ve won seven of their last eight games against Villa in all competitions and decimated them 6-1 back in January in the Premier League. Villa’s last win against City came back in 2013.

Sportsbooks odds on City retaining their trophy once again opens at -700, making them overwhelming favorites. Odds on Aston Villa defeating the current holders open at +1800, according to sportsbooks. Odds on the full-time result ending in a tie opens at +750.

Can Man City Still Salvage Their Season?

Their Premier League campaign has been a disaster by all intents and purposes. Despite sitting second which may not seem so bad to some, they sit 22 points league leaders Liverpool in what has been a pathetic attempt at a title defense.

However, their win at Real Madrid despite benching Raheem Sterling and Sergio Aguero was massive for the club, given their potential two-year ban from European competitions.

Another piece of silverware is up for grabs this weekend for Guardiola and his City side, but they know for their season to be a success the league cup will not be enough, they must succeed in Europe.

However, Aymeric Laporte went off with an injury against Madrid which could hamper them considering how they performed defensively while he was injured for most of the season.
