24/08/19, 20:00PM Kick Off (CEST)
Can Bilbao follow up on their opening day victory over Barcelona against last year’s 5th place Getafe?
A famous opening day victory over La Liga Champions Barcelona with a late stunning bicycle kick finish by the 38-year old Aritz Aduriz began the 2019/20 La Liga season quite amazingly for Bilbao fans. The exhilaration of celebrating Aduriz’s 88th minute winner may be tough to overtake for the regular season; however, they’ll start looking for that winning feeling once again against Getafe on Saturday.
After being promoted back to the La Liga in 2017 after a year out, Getafe have surprised many and have been an impressive outfit in the top flight of Spanish football. They’ve finished 8th and 5th the past two seasons and have won 15 games in both of the two seasons, securing Europa League last year for the first time in almost a decade.
The matchup between Getafe and Athletic Bilbao should prove to be an exciting time with both teams evenly matched with sportsbooks opening odds for Getafe to win at +162, with Bilbao having similarly odds at +200.
Getafe were drawn a tough opening day visit to the Wanda Metropolitan to face off against Atletico Madrid. A 1-0 defeat for Getafe may not be the worst defeat but were let off the hook when Alvaro Morata failed to score his penalty to make it 2-0 in the first half. Getafe almost tied the game with five minutes remaining when Angel Rodriguez struck the crossbar.
The Last Time Out
Getafe won the last matchup involving Bilbao, securing a 1-0 win in April of 2019. However, that is their only win in seven games against Bilbao, who’ve won three of those seven matches. Bilbao’s last victory over Getafe however was in 2016, over three years ago, proving the luck may have changed in these fixtures, alongside the improvement Getafe have shown since being promoted back to the La Liga.
These are one of the games that could truly go either way and wouldn’t be surprised if it ended in a tie. Sportsbooks has the game ending in a tie at +190. This may be a bet worth taking since three of the last four La Liga game between the two have actually ended in a tie.
Athletic Bilbao’s Inaki Williams had a career year last year, scoring 12 La Liga goals last season and could bag his first of the season against Getafe. Williams’ youth contrasts from Getafe’s ageing yet dependable frontline of Jaime Mata, Angel Rodriguez and Jorge Molina, who are 30, 32 and 37, compared to Williams’ 25 years of age.
Jaime Mata and Jorge Molina both had 14 La Liga goals for Getafe last season and it’s unseen whether they can produce a similar output this season, especially Molina who is 37 years of age.
Getafe and Bilbao are two hard-working sides who are staples of La Liga. A draw looks likely for this matchup and at +190, a decent profit can be made from what’s expected to be a tight and cagey affair.
