Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest Odds for 2020

What: The Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest

Where: Coney Island, New York

When: July 4th, 2020

Let’s start by giving this committee credit for still having this epic event in light of the pandemic we are all going through. Now, there will be no fans allowed and the number of contestants will be drastically fewer than usual as everyone wants to continue social distancing and just doing the “smart” thing. With less entries, that just makes Joey Chestnut and Miki Sudo even that much more of the favorites to take home the Mustard Belt yet again.

Sudo has never lost to another woman since entering this contest in 2014. Sudo took the title from Sonya Thomas who had won the three previous years, and those two have combined for all the wins on the women’s side of the bracket. Chestnut somehow lost in 2015 to Matt Stonie, but has dominated in every other year which includes winning in a landslide last year (he won by 21 hot dogs over the next closest contestant, Darron Breedon). “Jaws” is Chestnut’s nickname and I don’t really see anybody challending him this Independence Day, especially with such a smaller field of competitors trying to take his belt.

Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest Eating Line and Hot Dogs Consumed Over Under

Men’s Hot Dog Eating Line

-1250 Joey “Jaws” Chestnut

 +650 Any Other Male

Over/Under 72.5 Hot Dogs Consumed

-150 Over 72.5

+115 Under 72.5

I’m not even considering anyone else besides Chestnut, and the only question that remains is the over or under on the number of hot dogs consumed. Before I give my selection, let me just give you a few examples of other food eating contests Chestnut has mastered.

  • 2005 Waffle Eating Champion
  • 2007 Chicken Wing Champion (ate 182 wings in 30 minutes)
  • 2020 In February, he “wolfed” down 32 Big Mac’s from McDonald’s in 38 minutes
  • He has also sucked down a gallon of milk in just 41 seconds

Considering what America and the world is going through I expect “Jaws” to rip through these hot dogs. He will not only go over 72.5 dogs, but will set a new personal record of 75, eclipsing his person best of 74, which he accomplished in 2018.

Harry’s Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest Pick: Chestnut and the Over

The Female Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest Eating Line and Hot Dogs Consumed Over Under

Female’s Hot Dog Eating Line

-835 Miki Sudo

+500 Any Other Female

Over/Under 40.5 Hot Dogs Consumed

-150 Over 40.5

+115 Under 40.5

The UNLV grad Sudo has to be considered an easy winner in this spot. Everything points to her since she has never lost in six runs at this and there are even fewer women at the event to even attempt to give her a challenge. Here are a few of Sudo’s other food chowing championships:

  • In 2013, she won the Buffalo Buffet Bowl (a variety of delectable fatty foods) by eating five pounds of different items in 4 minutes and 17 seconds.
  • Talk about a trooper, the very next day in Buffalo she won the US National Buffalo Wing Eating Championship, eating 6.7 pounds in 12 minutes.

In regard to the total, I think she will want to put forth an overwhelming effort like Chestnut and both favorites will hit the over. Plus, if there is a “fishy” line for the festivities on the 4th, it is the total here. Sudo’s personal best was in 2017 when she finished off 41 dogs. The total currently sits at 40.5 and you have to lay a buck-fifty. If you didn’t know any better with that information you would take the under (she won once by eating “only” 31) but I’m reversing field and going the other way.

Harry’s Pick to Win the Women’s Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest: Sudo and the Over

To everyone out there have a great weekend of betting and from all of us at OddsUSA, happy 4th of July, and enjoy a hot dog or two… but please, not 70!
