What: Rocket Mortgage Classic
Where: Detroit Golf Club
When: July 2-5
It was good to see Dustin Johnson get back on the winning side as he held off numerous golfers to win in Connecticut. That victory marked the 13th straight year that Johnson has achieved at least one win on tour. This week the tour moves to the Midwest and specifically Michigan. This will not be the easiest of tournaments to handicap since golfers or caddies seem to be dropping like flies because of Covid-19 and that this will mark only the second year this classic will be played on this course.
Nate Lashley is the defending champion here and he was such a longshot that many sportsbooks didn’t even have a line on him since he was added to the original field two days late. Lashley was awesome recording not one but two 63’s over the four days last year. Another golfer who played well here last year was second place finisher Doc Redman. Redman is worth a shot at taking the week since he did what he did here last season and has been playing quite well this season on tour.
Some Not So Common Names For Top 20 Finishes at the Rocket Mortgage Classic
Here are some golfers that played well last season in Detroit. Like I said earlier, because this tournament is so new, it might just be that this course continues to suit these guys just fine (because their odds are tough to pass up).
+350 Brian Stuard
He is from Michigan and is 5th on tour in driving accuracy. Stuard also has two top 10 finishes this season
+425 Wes Roach
Roach was able to compile a top 5 finish here in 2019.
+600 Talor Gooch
Gooch finished in 17th here a season ago
Fed Ex Cup Standings Top 5
1—1583 Webb Simpson
Webb is back playing after pulling out of Travelers last week despite winning the week before
2—1543 Justin Thomas
Extremely surprised to see JT miss the cut in Connecticut
3-1531 Sungjae Im
Guy just plays in every tournament it seems
4—1270 Rory McIlroy
Rory had another solid performance last week
5—1196 Patrick Reed
Played well here last year and has been awesome so far this season.
Rocket Mortgage Classic Matchups
-120 Tony Finau
-110 Rickie Fowler
This line seems a bit low considering Fowler has missed two cuts in a row. I got a feeling that Fowler bounces back and plays well this week.
Harry’s Rocket Mortgage Classic Prop Bet Pick: Fowler
-115 Viktor Hovland
-115 Hideki Matsuyama
In only his rookie season, Hovland already has a win and it seems like he is always hovering around the top of the leaderboard. Matsuyama has had his troubles this season especially when it comes to his putting.
Harry’s Rocket Mortgage Matchup Pick: Hovland
-120 Adam Hadwin
-110 Doc Redman
Redman has been playing excellent of late and again, he scored a top 3 performance in this tournament’s first iteration last year. I’m taking the red-hot Doc Redman.
Harry’s PGA Tour Prop Bet Pick: Redman
-135 Brendan Todd
+105 Maverick McNealy
Todd is in the top 10 when it comes to the Fed Ex points standings and played in the final group last week on Sunday in Connecticut. He had a horrible final round but overall has been solid this season and I’ll take him in this matchup as well.
Trust the Man with Two First Names: Todd
Harry’s PGA Picks to Finish Top 10 and Win
+300 & +3300 Rickie Fowler
Again, I’m going on a feeling with Rickie to springboard back after two straight disappointing missed cuts. If you are uncomfortable with Fowler with his play of late you can still get him at plus money (+115) for a top 20 finish.
+150 & +2000 Patrick Reed
Reed finished in a tie for fifth here last season and has been tearing it up on tour this campaign. Reed played great this past weekend in Connecticut mostly because of his putting. He is 5th on tour in birdie average and is 8th in scoring average. Reed also is in the top 10 in Fed Ex Cup Points (5th) and is ranked 7th in the world.
Have a great 4th of July everyone and stay safe!!!
