Harry Gagnon’s Underdog Bet of NFL Week 17
The Game:
The Philadelphia Eagles at New York Giants
The Play:
Giants +4.5
A little more than a month ago, Philadelphia lost three games in a row (New England, Seattle, and Miami), but since then they have pulled out three straight wins… barely. You have to give quarterback Carson Wentz and the Eagles credit for fighting through injuries to get to this point; if they beat the Giants, they will win the NFC East and host a playoff game.
This Giants team would love to bounce the Eagles from the playoffs and they are playing like a team that is nowhere near close to rolling over and dying. The Giants have scored 77 points the last two weeks in back-to-back victories. Three weeks ago, this Eagles beat the Giants in overtime as they looked like a mash unit instead of a football team. In the last nine games, the Eagles have had just one game where a wide receiver went over 75 yards receiving (that was Alshon Jeffrey who is now done for the season). They have also had just one rusher go over 100 yards in a game all season.
They are barely getting by with no name rushers and receivers who—at the beginning of the season—were only known to their immediate families. Even their best pass catcher, TE Zach Ertz, got hurt in their win Sunday over Dallas. The Giants should take note of what the Eagles offense did against the Cowboys; paper-cutting them to death with passes to tight ends, and a bevy of screens to their running backs and wide receivers.
For the Giants, Saquon Barkley finally looked like the sensational rookie from last season, totaling almost 300 total yards against the Redskins. QB Daniel Jones lit up the Washington defense with five touchdowns and is playing with a ton of confidence since returning from injury. I see him putting it all out on the line in the final game of the season for the fans, Eli Manning and the Giants organization.
The Prediction:
19 New York Giants
16 Philadelphia Eagles
