Boston Red Sox Odds
Ten different pitchers have started the first 21 games for the Boston Red Sox, whose 6-15 record is the worst in the American League and their worst start since 1996. Boston owns a 9.90 ERA in a six-game losing streak that continued with an 11-5 loss to the New York Yankees on Saturday.
The team is hoping Chris Mazza can turn in a respectable outing when he is recalled from the alternate site to start on Sunday. Mazza will be making his first career start and 11th career appearance. He is one of the few Boston pitchers to pitch effectively against the Yankees, posting 2 2/3 scoreless innings in a 5-2 loss at New York on Aug. 1.
New York Yankees
The New York Yankees will likely construct a lineup for Sunday’s game against the Boston Red Sox without DJ LeMahieu. The AL batting leader sprained his left thumb during the fourth inning in Saturday’s 11-5 win and could join sluggers Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton on the injured list.
Following New York’s eighth straight win over Boston, manager Aaron Boone said X-rays were negative, and the team was awaiting results of an MRI and CT scan. Whoever is in the lineup, the Yankees hope to see J.A. Happ produce better command of the strike zone.
Happ is starting for the first time since issuing six walks over three innings in an 11-7 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies on Aug. 5. Happ is 11-4 with a 3.00 ERA in 25 career appearances (24 starts) against Boston and 4-0 with a 3.06 ERA against the Red Sox since becoming a Yankee in a trade with the Toronto Blue Jays in July 2018.
