New York Yankees Preview
When Gerrit Cole officially signed a $324 million contract back in December and gave an impressive press conference, nobody could have envisioned his first two starts being conducted in these circumstances. The first start was the season opener in a 60-game season due to the coronavirus pandemic that delayed the season from its original March 26 start and that halted in the sixth inning due to rain.
His next one Wednesday night will require some quick video preparation for a Wednesday start in Baltimore Instead of facing the Phillies, he and the Yankees will visit Baltimore for a two-game series on Wednesday. The schedule change was necessitated by numerous members of the Miami Marlins contracting coronavirus when they were in Philadelphia.
“We’re in a world where no one has dealt with anything like this before, so I think we all need to be pliable and be able to pivot and at least be open to adjust,” Yankees GM Brian Cashman said Tuesday afternoon.
Baltimore Orioles Preview
A year ago at this time, the Orioles were on their way to losing 17 of 19 meetings with the Yankees and being unable to prevent Gleyber Torres from hitting home runs off their pitching. Those days might as well be eons ago as the Orioles will face Torres again a week early on Wednesday.
The Orioles are still slated to face the Yankees Aug. 3-5 in Baltimore but the schedule change was made due to the coronavirus outbreak on the Miami Marlins, who were scheduled to face the Orioles before the home-and-home series was postponed. While taking every possible precaution does not guarantee anything, manager Brandon Hyde is confident in his players.
“I think our guys are taking this seriously,” Hyde said Sunday. “I think that we’re having a lot of conversations about it. We’re continuing to remind each other that it’s still happening. I think our guys are being really careful and they understand the importance of being as safe and as healthy as we possibly can and following the protocols that are so important to our organization. And our guys have been following that and I expect that to continue.”
