Boston Red Sox Preview
A four-game losing streak now vanquished, the Red Sox will aim for their first series victory of the young season when they face the New York Mets again Thursday. After scoring twice in six innings against Mets ace Jacob deGrom on Wednesday, the Red Sox scored four times over the final three innings against the New York bullpen and held on for a 6-5 victory in the opener of a two-game series.
The series finale at Citi Field will be the Red Sox’s second of seven consecutive games on the road. Left-hander Martin Perez (0-1, 7.20 ERA) will start for Boston after giving up five runs (four earned) over five innings in his Red Sox debut Saturday against the Orioles.
New York Mets Preview
Despite losing a game started by ace Jacob deGrom, the New York Mets can still take three of four games against the Boston Red Sox when the home-and-home set concludes Thursday. The Mets lost 6-5 on Wednesday despite a quality start from deGrom and the offense rallying with a run in the eighth inning and another in the ninth.
Yoenis Cespedes hit his second home run of the season Wednesday, Brandon Nimmo bashed his first, and Pete Alonso went 4-for-4. Left-hander Steven Matz (0-0, 1.50 ERA) will make his first career start against the Red Sox on Thursday after he gave up one run on two hits over six innings in a no-decision against the Braves on Saturday.
