Atlanta Braves Odds
Despite splitting the first two games in New York, the Atlanta Braves’ big bats are off to a slow start. Marcell Ozuna’s game-tying, two-strike homer off Edwin Diaz forced extra innings Saturday, but the trio of Ronald Acuna Jr., Ozzie Albies and Freddie Freeman were a combined 0-for-13 with five strikeouts. Through two games, they are 1-for-23 with nine of Atlanta’s 27 strikeouts.
LHP Sean Newcomb will start Sunday, returning to Atlanta’s rotation after making four starts out his 55 appearances last season. Newcomb is 3-3 with a 3.29 ERA in 13 career appearances (seven starts) against the Mets. His catcher will be a rookie in either Alex Jackson or William Contreras, as Travis d’Arnaud and Tyler Flowers have felt coronavirus symptoms in recent days.
New York Mets Odds
While New York Mets fans may be concerned about closer Edwin Diaz, new manager Luis Rojas is not. Rojas had to answer those questions Saturday when Diaz was one strike away before allowing a game-tying homer to Marcell Ozuna.
If the Mets have a save chance Sunday, it will be interesting to see if Rojas uses Diaz for a third straight game, something not normally done in a 162-game season but something that may occur given the urgency of a 60-game campaign. If not Diaz, it’s possible Dellin Betances could get the chance. The Mets are hoping whoever gets the next save chance will be doing so after Rick Porcello makes a successful debut after signing a one-year, $10 million contract.
