Chicago Cubs Preview
After baffling the Milwaukee Brewers in a complete game shutout on Opening Day, Chicago Cubs right-hander Kyle Hendricks will aim for an encore as the visiting Cubs continue their series against the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday. Hendricks (1-0) struggled against the Reds in 2019, pitching to a 5.16 ERA in four starts over 22 2/3 innings with four walks and 23 strikeouts.
The Cubs have won the first two games of the series and four of five out of the gate. Chicago has scored at least eight runs in three consecutive games, and got some needed pop from Javy Baez on Tuesday, as the second baseman belted his first two home runs of the season in an 8-5 win.
Cincinnati Reds Preview
Losers of four in a row entering Wednesday’s game against the visiting Chicago Cubs, the Cincinnati Reds now look to end the skid behind the starter who helped them open their season with a flourish. Righty Sonny Gray (1-0) scattered one run in six innings while striking out nine Detroit Tigers on Friday, but the Reds have scuffled since.
Although some hitters are producing as the team expected — Joey Votto and Nicholas Castellanos both are batting .333 — others are struggling. Eugenio Suarez finally collected his first hit of the season Tuesday, a ground-rule double. Gray is 3-2 with a 2.83 ERA in six career starts against the Cubs.
